Triniton tubes: are they really the best monitor type?

I am considering the KDS Avitron AV-195TF. It uses the Triniton display with an aperture grille of 0.24 mm.

It costs more, but considering you buy a new monitor only every 4 or 5 years, I would rather pay more for a really nice display.

Do Triniton tubes stand up to their reputation and is the display quality really there to justify their cost?

FD Trinitron tubes are very nice, and I swear by them. However I avoid KDS for my "personal" monitors since I bought (2) AV21TF's and they both sucked a fat one.

Look at Samsung or Sony.

I think the Trinitrons' are best ........... I have a Mitsubishi Diamondtron 91, and I just purchased a Sony E-400 for my 84 years young "net-surfing" Aunt.....!
After using her pc for two weeks while visiting her, I would get the Sony myself, if I had the chance over again (instead of the Mitsubishi) !
Really can't go wrong with either one though ................ ?

No question, Trinitron (Aperture Grill) monitors have excellent image quality and above average sharpness and colour vibrance. These days, however, you can't really call them a superior technology since similarly-priced Shadow Mask screens (ie. Samsung's DynaFlat tubes or ViewSonic's SuperClear) can often outperform them, and without the two annoying lines.

I agree about the lines. Trinitron has extraordinary image quality and sharpness, but once you notice those lines it just starts to get REALLY annoying (for me anyways).

Damnit, the only time I ever notice the lines on my Diamondtron is when someone brings it up in a thread like this! :p Trinitrons rule, but when buying a monitor I always think it's best (if possible) to compare the models that you're considering side-by-side before making a decision.

I think monitor preferences are (basically subjective) ..... just what you personally prefer to look at, unless you are doing cad or graphics for long hours on a daily basis, and you notice eye strain from one type or the other.

However, to me when looking at the Trinitron's sitting side by side w/shadow mask monitors, such as the Samsung or other Sync-master flat screens, they appear to have a "muddy" or "shaded" appearance, compared to the Trinitrons'?

I will take the two fine (hardly noticable) lines anytime just to get the bright, vibrant color of the AG Trinitron monitors ............. !

Which ever technology you prefer, ........... definatly go for the "FLAT" screen, it's hard to go back after you get to used to looking at one .........!

Anyone know a good place that has decent price for the Sony or Samsung or ViewSonic 21" monitors? Better yet if anyone knows a place around the DC area that has them on display.

Thanks!

Trinitron all the way for it's colour saturation and sharpness. It's a matter of taste ....like speakers. I never notice the lines unless someone brings it up.
There are quite a few members here who are satisfied with their kds. I bought one and wasn't...returned it and got a sony. Try the Kds out ans see how you like it.

Yeah, I'm pleased enough with my KDS; your mileage may vary depending on your system set-up as well as your taste.

It seems other than the two wires, people love Trinitrons. I was looking at this KDS in the store and didn't notice any wires. How should I get these wires to appear in the store?

LOL, well I guess if you actually want to see them, put up a white background like wordpad or notepad and maximize the window.

Ought to be careful, it's love/hate at first sight, some people, once they see them can brush it off, some people once they see them swear they'll always seem them :)

I'm too obsessive compulsive to not notice the damper wires.
Also, I wasn't too impressed with the geometry I see lately on aperture grille tubes. I have to mention though that the last good one I saw happened to be in a KDS, so good luck :)

The Eizo F980 21" tension screen mask is the standard by which all others are judged. The focus and convergence in all areas of the screen are unmatched. So is the price, $1900+

Really? That's handy to know, I've been trying to find the best shadow mask tube ou there. The Eizo monitors seem to be the ones to look at then if what you say is true :)

Haha for me, the two damper wires really didn't bother me. In fact, i have to specifcally look for them, lol.

But it just depends on the person. Some people are really sensitive to it.

While the KDS Avitron is considered the standard of Sony FD "clones", many other monitor manufactures have FD tube models in their lineups. I was considering buying the KDS but happend upon CTX's FD Triniton offering - the 960PRF, it includes a BNC input and a powered four port USB hub with Windows control of monitor settings. Best of all it's generally available cheaper than the KDS monitor.
As for Triniton vs everything else, I work with a number of high end graphic artist and none would even think about using anything but a Triniton tube, these people need the best display possible to do their work properly.

In the office I work in we have a mix of many monitors. Every Trinitron monitor stands out. The Shadow Mask monitors look dull, grey and flat, like you are looking through a dirty window. I have a Mitsu 900U myself. The damper lines are almost impossible to see. You really have to try hard to find them. A tiny price to pay for the better color and brightness of an AG tube.

This is getting way to subjective, comments like "Aperture Grille really stand out", and "graphic artists only use Trinitron" to show why they're best is simply not true. Even though I prefer aperture grille myself, I have met from ordinary people to graphic professionals that prefer shadow mask for a very simple reason, personal preference. Oldfart if you ever get your 753DF you'll know what Im saying, crappy monitors will look like crap regardless of whether they're aperture grille or shadow mask, a monitor being aperture grille doesnt automatically make it better than a shadow mask one.

I personally cannot see why Trinitron is more highly regarded than Diamondtron. I would put them about level.

I agree with dkozloski about the Eizo.
In general Eiza makes the best monitors IMO, but they cost quite a bit as well, the Ferrari's of monitors :)

The downside to an Eizo F980 is the amount of control you have over the picture quality. You can digitally adjust the picture in 256 discrete areas. You could fritter away a lifetime just tinkering with it. An upside is that the dot pitch is 0.008".
