Does anyone know if these larger flat Trinatron/Diamondtron monitors are inherently not as good when screen background should be dark black?
For example, when viewing the ArsTechnica web home page.
Both the monitors I have tried look kind of washed out, nice and bright but, the colors don't seem to be as deep and rich as my Toshiba Infinia 17" shadow mask monitor?
The true flats are super sharp and bright, but the bright background seems to leach through the dark colors, reducing the color depth................or is this a normal trade off for the extra sharpness ???

I have a 32MB DDR Radeon video card.

general trinitron have higher color contrast and reporduction. Where you uses these monitors on your radeon or at the store? I would question their choice of displace cards with the signal being split so many ways to other monitors. Also, trinitron are more desirable for graphics artist because of its brighter, more saturated color, clarity, and contrast. So something is not right.

I found that when I turned down the brightness way down (less than 20, out of 100) everything looked much better.

Yeah, monitors need to be tweaked too! Play with your contrast and brightness (as mentioned by the almighty PEZ), also there is some software (name eludes me right now) which comes with a card with colors printed on it, and you adjust the settings so they match the card.

You may want to adjust everything in a couple of different room lights to get it optimized...
