I used GAIM, I demand very little from a IM client, I switched from Trillian 0.7x to try GAIM one day, and it worked just as well, so in my laziness I never went back.

really, its ur own preference. try these three and see which one YOU like best, not what other people think

Gaim
trillain
miranda

Trillian, since I love the extra features, and it's very easy to use. I also love the plugin feature.
yup, all about the plugins... I use about 7 of them multiple times a day instead of having more systray app clutter.

RSS (multiple sites), POP/Gmail notification, package tracking, stocks, weather, atomic time updater, and of course all other IM clients in one.

from the gaim faq...

Does Gaim support file transfer?
AIM and ICQ file transfer is partially implemented. Notably, it will fail when the sender is behind a NAT device, and sometimes when the sender is behind a firewall even if not behind a NAT. Jonathan Clark is working on this as a Summer of Code project.

anyone know if transfers work behind a NAT with trillian or miranda? Its kind of annoying to have to switch to AIM whever I'm sending someone a pic.

After using Trillian for years, I switched to GAIM in a heartbeat. Tabbed message windows and a tiny memory footprint are awesome.

GAIM. I used trillian but found the interface to be a big clutter. Gaim provides a simpler interface.

They are both good IM clients. However, it may never replace your main IM client.

GAIM.
I have Trillian installed but I try to avoid using it since I find it to damn annoying.
Too much cuteness and bloat, and the config system is extremely confusing.

I am able to make file transfer with my friend msn client from my trillian pro 3.1 behind my linksys wrt54g router and zonealarm pro also AIM works just fine too.

I give a GAIM another shot for my lappy I found out latest version of AntiVir found out Gaim files have a trojain virus I tried other different file mirror download still detect as trojain virus.

gaim. a lot cleaner interface.

I've always hated trillian's interface. It looks like crap, and I don't like the "combined buddies" feature. It looks bloated, and tries to look "cool."

False positive? No problems with any of the GAIM mirrors here.
