Yesterday's problem was solved by disabling Secure IM. After doing that, I was able to connect without a problem.

However, I am again unable to connect today, AND Secure IM is already disabled. In fact, I downloaded the new Trillian (v0.72), and Secure IM is "forcefully disabled."

Anyone else experiencing problems? Any solutions yet? I already emailed Trillian.

Edit: Over on the Trillian tech support message board (this thread), someone said that he installed AOL Instant Messenger after he couldn't connect to IM throgh Trillian. This person said that the icon installed by AOL IM is an anti-Trillian icon (here it is)! How dare AOL, those bastards...

I was having major issues last night with trillian. Giving the ole' Unable to receive flap error we used to get back in the .635 days. I figured they had screwed over trillian again and would have to wait till they have a patch for it. I am surprised that AOL didn't also screw with ICQ (they own them too) to keep trillian out. Guess its just a matter of time.

Sigh :frown:

I just don't understand why AOL has a problem with someone else giving away their free service.

Well, I take that back; I know that IM has an advertising box at the top of the window. But I know a lot of people use something like DeadAIM, that removes that ad box anyway. IN fact, I'd be willing to bet that most of the people who use something like DeadAIM are the same people who use Trillian.

Wel because they have advertising on there. I use AIM and I don't block the ads. I even sometimes click on them. These services cost money and if AOL is paying for the cost of providing the service the least you could do is use the service as intended!

The rumor floating around the Trillian message boards now is that v.71 and .72 of Trillian are having trouble connecting to AIM, but v.70 is working fine.

Do you have an earlier version?

On the other hand, it is MY computer, so shouldn't I have the right to block the ads if I choose to do so? Just because AOL thinks I should do something doesn't mean that I have to do it.

I don't believe that. There are other ways to make money. MSN, Yahoo! and even ICQ (which is also owned by AOL) have no problems connecting. Why wouldn't they have problems with users installing Trillian as well?

well that is part of the agreement to using a free site or service. So i don't want to make my truck payment but still want to drive it. same principle. I couldn't complain wheh they repo!

That's not really the same.

A more similar principle would be how TIVO allows you to skip commercials. It's your TV. If you can find a way to not watch commercials, you can do it.
Of course, if the publishers can figure out a better way to force you to watch the commercials (Truman Show?), they can do that, too.
You can use an ad blocker and AOL can figure out a way to cut people who use ad blockers.

I think it's just b/c AOL has historically been very finicky about cross-talking between networks. Remeber the big hubbub when MSN Messenger could talk to AIM and they kept filing lawsuits and countersuits and plugging the holes and MS finding more holes?
Heck, they won't even allow ICQ to crosstalk with AIM and they OWN ICQ!

I've been using Gaim in solaris and had no problems thus far....

I had trouble connecting to AIM yesterday, via Trillian. But no problems today. I'm using .71.

And you've disconnected and reconnected since yesterday?

I was connected since last night and I was fine, but as soon as I reconnected it stopped working.

I just connected right when I posted that message.. Hadn't been connected since Monday evening when I put the computer in stand-by mode. I tried to connect yesterday, got the error, and didn't mess with it for the rest of the day.

Looks like they've posted a new version, .721.

It's supposed to fix it. I'm going to give it a whirl.

Thanks for that tip, Arschloch! I installed v.70 this morning (after looking long and hard for it) and it works great. :)

I couldn't get it to work this morning either. I'll have to try the new version. My wife uses it all the time, and I hate AIM itself.

<< .721 is working!

It was downloading at horrible speeds, but it DOES work.

I can't get to the site. Any way you could send me the file? I could even put it up online for a short amount of time (bandwidth isn't free).
