Triggered THERMTRIP on core i7 920

Just had my core i7 920 auto-shutdown/THERMTRIP because of a broken cooling pump :( I wish I could have manually shutdown sooner, but was away from the PC when the temps exploded.

Does anyone have experience with these things on an i7 920 - is it normal to survive a THERMTRIP event with no permanent damage?

I won't be able to test the CPU until I get my hands on another cooler next week. The POS that failed was the Asetek LCLC 240mm OEM through Cyberpower - in all fairness it performed really well temperature-wise for 3 months but that's all moot now.

Any suggestions for something I can overnight from Newegg or Amazon to hold me over? The Coolermaster V8 was originally recommended to me as an alternative to the Asetek.

Thanks!

Apparently this is not that big of a deal. I have had a little discussion with the company that produces Indigo Extreme TIM. This TIM is a metal that requires a reflow involving taking the CPU to over 90 deg C ... really. I did this & it all went precisely as they say.

Chatting with them, they indicated that thermal trip occurs very near 100 deg C & will drop down to 95 deg C. Supposedly the CPU bounces back & forth between these temps. *I* was not so interested to let the process hit 100 deg C (but did get close), so I do not have 1st hand experience with THERMTRIP, per se.

The CPU should be ok is the short story!!

If you just want something quick and cheap to get it up and running, get any LGA 1366 compatible heatsink, like a Freezer 7 Pro Rev. 2 (IIRC). If you want something that'll perform well, spend more and get a TRUE, Venomous X, or Megahalem.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I picked up a $30 Coolermaster Hyper 212+ @ local Microcenter (cool store), spent 3 hours slapping it in, and it looks like the CPU survived - I'll run Prime95/OCCT for a bit just to be sure.

What I'm shocked at is it's performing within 2-3 degrees of the $100 Asetek LCLC with the beefed up 240mm radiator. I'm idling low 30's and peaking 65C under Prime95 for an hour (core i7 920 D0, stock speeds), ambient temp 67F.

It should be fine. Ive ran ~3 DTjmax for a few hours and everything so far is running fine.
