tried to import inbox but didn't work

I tried to import my inbox.dbx from win2k to my new XP outlook express like was suggested here, but it didn't work. The file is on the desktop and when I search for it there with the import thing, it won't find it. Is there any way I can get this to work?

Are you selecting the right version of email?
Meaning what version of Outlook Express did you have before you upgraded to XP?

I just did this minutes ago. When you select import messages you get a window asking the format where you select OE6 when you click next the window has 3 check boxes in it. The second one says import mail from an oe6 store directory. click that and click ok in the next box browse to the desktop and see if that works. It took me a couple of times to get it to work.

Hope this helps.

If it is a new XP machine then you don't really need import. Import is for merging messages and is really a pain in the arse.

Do yourself a favor and just copy the files (inbox.dbx, outbox.dbx etc.) to the appropriate location on the new machine.

Not sure, I have 2000 but am in 98 right now. Just run a search of your drive for "*.dbx" and you will find them.

I created a folder on my D drive called Outlook mail files and then went into options and told OE to store my .dbx files there. This way I can just copy and paste to make backups and I will never blow away my mail if I reinstall my C drive.

Try just replacing the files with the old ones. In windows XP, outlook stores the email files in:

C:\Documents and Settings\{USER NAME}\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{BIG LONG NUMBER}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

in 98 I believe it's stored in: C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\{BIG LONG NUMBER}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Hope this helps, I copy and replace my email files all the time when installing/reinstalling an OS.
