TricPlate License Plate Hider

Yeah I think they are. Not well enforced though. I had one on my Contour just because that's what the car came with. Drove around with it on there for like 4 years and then someone told me they were pretty sure they were illegal in NY. I was pulled over a couple of times though and none of the officers ever mentioned it to me.

Are glossy finishes for plate covers illegal for some states?

Just like many illegalities with vehicles (tint is a good example) they are typically enforced for ulterior motives - such as excuses to pull you over to look for other things (warrants, etc).

I've had 7% tint all around on my truck since I bought it in 08. Additionally, every year that I renew my registration I just keep the stickers paperclipped to the registration instead of applying them to my plate, so my plate still has 08 tags. It's sort of a social experiment. I live and commute 90% in the more affluent part of town and have cops behind me all the time and in the two years I've been running this experiment I've never been pulled over for the tint and/or registration. The one time I was pulled over for speeding the officer ignored registration and tint entirely, gave me my ticket and sent me on my way. Obviously had my registration NOT been actually up to date he would have ticketed me and possibly even towed the car, but he didn't even pay attention to the date on the sticker and just ran my plates through the system.

Now, I can pretty much guarantee you that if I were to wander into the north or south side of town (primarily low-income high crime black and high crime hispanic respectively) I would be pulled over in a heartbeat for either tint and/or sticker because in those parts of town the police constantly look for those types of things, where out in the West side and the suburbs police have better things to do.

Sounds racist, and it probably is - but it's still cold hard reality.

Stuff like this makes a little more sense for the crotch rocket crowd but you ain't getting away in your GTO/"Honda Civic VTEC yo!".

Although seriously risky to run around with this active at all times, it also works wonders for red light cameras.

You flip the switch if it's close?

Bingo. While I'm sure this would effect other areas more, our local municipalities do not allow red light cameras, but the city is right on a state border and our neighbor doesn't have the same resignations towards them and utilizes them as a revenue stream. Whenever I cross the river I simply turn it on for the duration and don't worry about any camera, period. Never been pulled over with it in this mode, but I'd imagine as soon as I saw the lights I could just disable it (you don't need to use the fob, there is a switch you can install and mine is a trigger right below the turn signal switch on my bike handle) and the cop probably wouldn't give it a second glance and would just assume he was seeing shit.

Of course, I could be wrong. Though I bank a lot on the near zero amount of press this device has and the low law enforcement knowledge. As with all the better things in life, the faster this becomes more well known the more risk will be involved, so I'm going to enjoy it while I can.

You do realize how stupidly dangerous it is to run a red light right? Especially on a bike?

Really, Jules?

So risky that on the roads in the middle of Iowa where it's flat as an Asian womans rack for miles in any direction and I'd have to be blind NOT to see someone 5+ miles out by my peripherals alone, that I'm totally unjustified having a little 100+mph fun at 2AM?

Really?

I'm not driving around the Suburbs of SoCal in rush hour traffic endangering peoples lives, Jules - I'm driving past fucking recessed cornfields in the middle of the night so don't get your panties in a bunch. <3

would be cool if you could have it triggered from a radar detector lol.

Totally missing the point. The LAST thing you want is for police to KNOW you have this. Unless you are in a car capable of evading (and you better be 100% GODDAMN sure) and hiding from the police (see: unlikely), you would NOT want this to activate on an officer tagging you with a speed measuring device of ANY kind.

Thats felony conviction written all over it!

That is just a bad idea..running a red light. Doesn't matter where you live.

God this forum is full of overly opinionated people with perverse senses of justice that typically only apply to others. Read the post 3 up for a better understanding of my specific scenario. And yes, there ARE red light cameras in the middle of bumfuck nowhere in Iowa - it's an excuse not to use police in those areas.

Still doesn't mean you should run a red light.

I've been at red lights, with no one coming for miles, but I still feel like the cops are looking...waiting for me to go so they can write me a ticket.

So when they shorten the yellow from what it has always been, or use a far too short yellow (there's a guideline, I think it's .5 seconds per 10 mph/limit, or something like that), and you get ticketed for their greed, how will you feel about "running a red light"?

I will gladly take you to the danger zone, but we'll be waiting at the red light 🙁

Sure as hell wouldn't come on AT and post about it!

Well, hey, come to AT and post about it. After a quick "I told you so", you'd get the ATOT Armchair Lawyer Division to lend their assistance.
