I don't see how it is anything other than extremely illegal. Brownback is a piece of shit. Tea Party policies are fucking stupid. Trickle down doesn't work for shit and every single person in the world knows it.

Again, the KS assembly likely has the power of the purse and thus it's not "illegal" by default. Stupid and self-defeating are the words you're looking for. Regardless of your party or preferred politics, if your solution requires scorched earth tactics to implement then you're almost guaranteed that your solution isn't as good as you think it is.

FDR threatened (and failed) to increase the number of supreme court members. While despicable, that could have been a legal and consitutional move. The constitution doesn't limit the number of supreme court members.

Brownback is also doing something despicable, essentially trying to fire those judges who are against him (do personal harm to them). There is a fundamental difference though. The Kansas consitution doesn't allow Brownback to do so. http://kslib.info/829/Article-Three-Judicial

I think their scorched earth tactics will come full circle. To get at the judges they just have to cut the salaries of all state employees. Think of the money saved by laying off the entire state!
 
Not having a judiciary to defend things like property rights and contracts will be great for business. Kansas economic miracle coming right up 🙂
I have no pity for Kansans, since they had ample opportunity to see what kind of idiot was running their state, and they gave him another term. To show Obama, I guess. Well they did show him, how dumb they are. Now enjoy paying for it.

They may have the power of the purse, but doesn't this seem pretty similar to what Perry has corruption charges against him for? It looks pretty exactly like the definition of extortion to me.

I see that glenn1 is doing a fine job of explaining to you how things are going to work in the nation from this point forward. I refer to it simply as Chicago-style politics. Your party brought a gun to the knife fight and you didn't expect things to intensify? So how about reign in your party and have them kiss the feet of the Republicans in a gesture of peace?

The country is going to burn, it's just a matter of when. The sooner it's over the sooner the rebuilding can start. When we get to the point that the party in power is jailing their political opponents you'll know we're getting close. In the meantime you should ration your outrage better because your heroes may not be the ones to come out on top.

If you want some more lecturing (you know the kind you like to dish out) I can give you plenty. But first you're going to have to convince me you're worthy of it.

But as can be seen in the following chart, from here, the Kansas unemployment rate (blue line in the chart) was well below the national unemployment rate (in gray) way before Brownback's tax changes went into effect in 2012:

In fact, since Brownback's changes, the drop in the Kansas unemployment rate has flattened out relative to the drop in the national unemployment rate.

Kansas is spared some unemployment woe simply because of the ongoing trend of urbanization. Many of their young adults head for greener pastures as soon as they are able. What population growth they've seen is mostly those horrid brown people.
 
I must say, as strange as it may be for someone from California, I love reading about Kansas politics. They aren't afraid to experiment with ideas already known to fail everywhere else they've been tried. Supply-side economics from Art Laffer. Getting rid of judicial independence. The fun just never ends with these guys. And it's a taste of what happens when modern day Republican party gets its way. Just like California is a taste of what happens if modern day Democratic party gets its way.

Slate had an interesting article that suggested the Kansas judiciary should sue the governor in federal court.

Apparently the U.S. constitution guarantees the states a republican form of government, (that's republican form - checks and balances - 3 branches - representatives, not "republican" for those who can't read). Removing the judiciary maybe enough to violate this and get the laws overturned in federal court.

No need to get too fancy. I'd just call Brownback's bluff and let him shut down the judiciary. See how well that goes. Kansas Republicans are their own worst enemies at this point. Let them self destruct.

Well for one, you might as well eliminate cops as well. If the court has no money you can't get search warrants, nor can you fulfill the constitutional right to a speedy trial, so anyone charged will have be able to get a federal court that dismiss the charges.

It's all bluff. Basic law enforcement can't function w/o a judiciary. The jails will fill with people who can't bond out quicker than they can say WTF happened? & stay stuffed because they can't be processed through the system.

File suit? Like where, other than federal court which may lack jurisdiction?

Right wing zealots never think it through to the end.

I'm cheering for the Kansas SCOTUS, the federal judiciary & Obama's DoJ to stuff it all so far up Brownback's ass that Repubs will cringe every time it's mentioned, even 30 years from now.
