In an interview if they ask "if a family member was stealing, would you report it to their boss?" yes or no

I'm really confused on this one, since it's like, super honest and betrayal, or, bleh

"Yes I would sir! A law breaker is a lawbreaker, and those who assist criminals are criminals themselves"

Just tell them what they want to hear.

If they ask you "If person X is stealing"...the answer is always yes i would report it.
Even if it was Jesus, and you were going to hell by telling on him. If you want the job, you better say you would.

Just tell them what they want to hear.

Exactly, and show them that you don't have morals.

What about saying you would confront the person first and give them a chance to turn themselves in?

I've always said "no" because it's the truth.

But then I've never really had a decent job, soooo....

Urhrmm... helping out a criminal steal proves you don't have morals. Standing up for the law and reporting criminal activity means you have morals and wont let them be swayed simply because you know the person..

If I knew the person as more than a coworker, I would approach them as a friend and explain to them that I know what they are up to and that I don't approve. Tell them to stop and if they don't I would then report it.

So if you defend a thief who is a family member you don't have morals?

If your brother would steal something, you would report him in?

I would never betray my family. I would tell him that it wasn't right and that he shouldn't do it and bitch-slap that family member but turning him into the police? No way.

they are looking for an "out of the box answer" choose c. You'd tell the family member, you now, and demand full reparation to the company or else you'd turn them in. In addition, if you ever found out that they did it again, they are getting reported.

I hate questions like this, I mean what is the right answer? Its like them asking you, "Would you rather kill a baby or a puppy?" WTF.

Duff's answer is the best.

I have to agree. I would plead with him to make it right, and if he didn't I would probably do so myself (i.e. I would try to return it if possible); however, there's absolutely no way I would ever turn him in.

I'm starting to think that a lot of these "hypothetical" questions are created by clueless HR who read a book or two and think that they're being savy, when in actual fact they're just wasting time.

In regards to that question i wouldn't answer it directly. You can't win. I'd say that I would encourage my family member to own up to it. If they still insist on stealing, then I'd tell, for their own good. @(#*king dumb questions sometimes HR asks, aren't they?

Wrong. Everyone has morals. Just some people's morals differ from others.

Well, then you become an accomplice and go to jail with him. No one will feel sorry for you being involved in a crime family.

What about if a family member was a rapist or a murderer? Would you turn them in?

that's fine to be that way but you won't get the job if you put it as your answer.
