What is Tribes 2?
Tribes 2 is a unique teambased strategic first person shooter. The game has different armour classes, accessory packs, deployable equipment, bases with base assets, and vehicles.

Here are some gameplay videos.

Tribes 2 still has a strong vibrant community even a decade after it was released. The gameplay is simply superb.

Check it out!

Holy CRAP! What a wave of memories reading all the old names (well, old-ish, as Tribes history goes). I'm shocked at the roster you've already assembled. Vanguard/Rapture/et al will ride one last time! (well, we ALWAYS say "this is the last time", right? 🙂

I do really really miss the exhilaration of that perfect capping run; no game has ever come even close to that level of mobility, imho. Oh, and speaking of which, the tourney will obviously be running Classic... RIGHT?? ;-)

Running down the that TWL thread really takes me back... still full of the same group of insufferable jerks, I see. (haha, just kidding! ... but seriously ...)

I actually get a bit melancholy thinking about Tribes. It's no exaggeration to say it was the single greatest impairment to my high school years, which I do regret, but what a way to waste them! Tribes will forever hold a key place in my gaming heart (so much so that my friends groan if they even suspect the topic may come up during a conversation). Truly magical moments which I've long since accepted are a thing of the past for me, given all the changes in my life, but that just makes me all the more thankful for the memories.

160 people so far, that's really great. I hope the classics (Tribes, UT99, Quake 3) live on forever since consolization killed the entire arena-style FPS genre.

I was never really able to get into Tribes 2 even though I actually bought the game (used). I just found the movement to be too difficult. However, I could tell that it was a great game with a very dedicated fanbase.

Yes the Tourney will be running Classic.

It takes a little getting used to for sure due to the Z axis and skiing. Usually a couple of weeks playing to get the movement down. After that it is a real joy as it adds so much depth to the First Person Shooter genre.

The movement combined with the armour classes, packs, deployables all combined with base assets which in turn is all centered around the Capture the Flag theme is what gave the game so much depth and replayability.

The game presents players and teams with such variety of options with which play with in order to achieve the task at hand. This, I think, is what really set Tribes 2 apart from the generic twitch shooters which continue to dominate the first person shooter popularity charts.

If Tribes 2 was not buggy upon release and had an extensive marketing campaign it would, no doubt, have been much more popular. Many of those who try it are pretty blown away, even today.

I played the hell out of Tribes, but I could never get into 2. Something about the first one just felt perfect, the second one seemed like it was trying to hard to improve on a nearly perfect formula.

I have sweet memories of spending hours sneaking into enemy generator rooms as a heavy! I agree the original tribes was something unique, I wish we had something similar today.

Loved Tribes (Still amazed there are so many servers still up)
Love Tribes 2 , I pop it onto the system every now and then and unpack the 400 or so maps I have for it, Dont forget to set the CPU affinity or WOW thats fast with bots.
It sucks that all the main servers are gone.

Tribes Vengance blew bigtime chunks.

No doubt about the melloncoly.

Count me in on playing the heck out of Tribes... Tribes 2 didn't make it a month on my PC.

First off, T1>T2. Now thats out of the way.

A pic of the T2 beta I was in. Wow, they really screwed this up.

Obviously My T2 mouse pad that used to rock.

And then made a Tribes plate to put on the side of my PC... wow.

I listened to the Tribes music the other day, pretty funny stuff. Bought Tribes 6 days before my girl was born.. who just turned 12. Man getting old.

edit, found another pic to prove that T1 is better. From my old Prommy system.

Tribes 2 has plenty of servers and an active competitive community. You can download Tribes 2 and the patch at www.tribesnext.com and once installed and patched you can play.

There are people playing 24/7 and in the evenings (USA time) there are always about 40-50 people in the Goonhaven server plus others scrimming or holding pickups in a few of the other servers.

For those who did not like T2 as they were used to T1 you ought to try it now. The T2 that is played now is Classic Mod which has skiing just as fast as T1.

I think T2 is actually better simply because it has the speed of T1 (since Classic was made) and has the extra gameplay dynamics in regards to the deployables and packs.

Currently over 180 people have signed up for the tourney. Signups end this Friday so install and try it out and then sign up. Skill level is immaterial.

🙂

the whole part of tribes 1 that appealed to me was the mods that allowed for awesome base defence. i would engineer the shit out of our base making it into an impenetrable fortress.

none of the new tribes have that... not even tribes 2.

Tribes 2 did have those mods but the communities for those mods died years before official support for Tribes 2 ended (and was later revived with Tribes 2 Next or whatever).
