I am still tweaking around trying to get a good balance of frame rate and eye candy.

What are your settings, driver versions, OS, CPU and RAM amounts?

I also rip this from planet tribes

<< Here are the drivers we tested with and the video mode that we experienced the best performance with for each of the card groups. I hope this helps you troubleshoot your own systems.

Win2K using 11.01Dets and running at either 1280x960 or 1024x768.

Whoa viper, you able to play at that res. :Q

I drop it down to 800*600. Actually I have not tried it any higher then that. My brother does report Tribes 2 with a radeon 64 MB DDR and a 1.5 Ghz P4 will run with all the details and most other setting turn all the way up @1024 res fluidly.

I run at 800*600 too,but I've heard there's little/no framerate difference between 800*600 and 1024*768. I'm also running the 11.50 detonator drivers on my Geforce2 GTS.

I'm running at 16-bit textures and 16-bit color. You have to set two settings...change the texture setting from palletized to 16 or 32 bit. I don't know what palletized does, but it makes the water clipping messed up and causes other artifacts. Just have a set texture bit level. Going 32 bit is too much of a framerate hit for me.

One thing that some people may not know, is that you have to FORCE the Geforce not to use Antialiasing with the latest detonators. Go into the Nvidia settings under Display and you'll see what I mean. This improved my framerate too.

I think having 256MB of RAM would help out a lot in this game...I only have 128 so I'm at a disadvantage.
My OS is WinME (yes I know it sucks...but I have nothing else other than win2k). I think win2k will cause a huge performance hit. My CPU is a Duron 650@800.

Supposedly after they fix all the major bugs their gonna do some optimization stuff that'll make the game run a lot smoother. One thing they're also talking about is making a Geforce3 update :)

Good luck to all.

<< That, but more it's your TNT2U that's not doin' anything for you... >>

currenty running a radeon 64 MB DDR. I am well aware of my TNT2u wont last. But at moment my bro has his radeo in my comp. That is until we get that bios for his MB. Then it back to the TNT2u for me.

I tried 16bit color but ugghh. Smoke trails just where way to ugly for me to look at. So I run at 32bit. And radeon isn't really any faster then 16bit anyways.

texture compression was the biggest tweak.

actually i exaggerated a bit.....

mainly i get stutters and jerks while turning near buildings

and on some maps with heavy fog when i try to zoom in my fps drop WAY down, but other then that it is very playable, 72 player games are insane. :D

I have the same problem with buildings. Dunno why either. I just turn things down until I was able to play around buildings with out a problem.

yes 64+ player games are insane! And I love it! It feel like you are actually in a a big ass battle. I love it when you see the screen shakes form a mortor hitting a building or when a pilot takes his plane in for a nose dive.

i love this game. I am on a dial up but its still pretty playable.

Cloaking pack and shocklance is SO fun. its funny cloaking into the generators, placing landmines by the entrances and destroying their generators.

also I've heard people have successfuly cloaked and entered a enemy vehical, and then ram it straight into a mountain, of course with enemy players aboard :D

LOL! I seen enimies riding together in one vehicle. Off course I am trying to shot those mofos down. Sachel bomb is pretty powerful weapon. More powerful then a mortor shell. And you can remote detinate it. My bro has fun going into bases with that.

*someone set us up the bomb!*

ive noticed changing res doesnt affect FPS AT ALL, i went from 1394x1044 t0 640x480 and there was like not even a 5 fps framerate change, my gts is running at 200/380, im guessing its my cpu being the limiting factor kinda like in UT. im running det 11.01 and gts on a duron at 650 mhz 320 megs of ram at 110mhz cas2 on win 98.

Cloaking is great for espionage, its just way too fun. Its also fun to fight people while cloaking cause they lose track of you so fast.

My favorite thing is messing with the assault tank. As the driver you can run people over, as the gunner you can mortar people into oblivion.

Bombing is fun too, as long as you don't get an assclown for a pilot.

Seems like a lot of people on this forum are into tribes2...any interest in starting an Anandtech tribe? :)

I would be interested Shiva, except we already have our own tribe. Shadows of Darkness (SoD) will carry over from tribes :). Has for cloaked people, just watch for their footsteps. And nail them :p

I played tribes 2 once before I uninstalled it, I had everything on the highest setting & resolution at 800x600 & it ran fine, but once I bumped it up to 1024x768, the mouse cursor moved really slow, so I went back to 800x600. I have 512MB cas2 crucial, win98se, 933 PIII & creativelabs Geforce2 32MB GTS using the 7.58 whql drivers & it still takes a hit at 1024x768. Black & white seems a little more fun but the character design sure looks like final fantasy 7.

Win2k with GF2 GTS, using CL 6.34 drivers and BlasterControl4.

I had the 6.50 installed, but I couldn't turn on AA at all without a 3rd party tweak utility. So, I went back to the CL 6.34 since there was no real change in FPS for me. Typically I play at 16-bit everything, with all sliders maxed in 1024x768. If I drop my framerate too much, I'll probably go 800x600.

/me looks for next comp upgrade for T2.

Quit talking about Tribes 2. I won't be getting it till Wednesday and all this talk is making me want it. But if you look at my system (cel 550mhz) I don't think it will be running too well though I should be able to play 640x480 mid texture pretty decent.

Got my ram, motherboard, hsf coming soon.... just need my 1.2ghz Tbird and I'll be set for Tribes 2 though! :D

Tribes 2 rocks :) I have it at 800x600 16 bit. But details turned up high. Forgot what drivers I'm using though. My comp is a P3-700 @ 933, 256 mbs of pc133 cl2 (crucial), and Asus GF2 GTS.

How can you tell how many FPS you are getting?

Also, I can't get it to run in Win2k :( I can load it fine, but then when it updates the updater, tribes2.exe causes an illegal op and tribes2 crashes :( Win98SE runs fine though.

And is anyone else constantly getting disconnected? I'm on cable, but am always getting cut-off the server I'm on or the little disconnect pic where your compass is.

GeForce2 Ultra
1280x1024 32 Bit
Det. 4 .11 Drivers
Windows ME

Runs super smooth and plenty of eye candy.
Except the Tribes 2 netcode really sucks, being the gunner in a tank and having the tank move left or right will give you totally weird aim when you shoot, and I am playing at 30 ping, so I can't imagine anything higher. Jeez, o yeah, tribes 2 = tribes 1
lol

I happen to think the net code is pretty good. I mean come on, ho often do you see 64+ people on a server. :) I played with 200 ping, which makes it much harder to aim ;). I Also do notice that more physics is involved. It take account for you own momentum and adds it to the shots direction of travel.
