Not really. Tribes is capture the flag (has other modes too, but CTF is the most fun) with driveable multi-person vehicles, three different classes, multiple options for your armor/weapons "loadout", many options for base defense, etc. It's really a very well-rounded game that was sunk by a too-early (read: buggier than the Congo) release. It also has a fairly steep learning curve since you have a rocket pack on your back that has a limited burn time.....if you get the hang of it, you can really cruise around a map, but it can be super-frustrating if you screw up and get stuck in a ravine or something and get blasted to bits while waiting for the thing to recharge.

Review at FS.

Official site at Sierra.
The game looks awesome, but I'm a bit concerned that I won't have a clue when it comes to playing it. I'm pretty good at TFC (usually one of the top 2-3 players on each server I play on) but suck pretty royally at CS and games like Q3 or UT2K3. How's the learning curve? Need anything special, besides a headset, to play/play well? I'm an arrowkey player, btw - never could get the hang of asd stuff.

Rob

The hardest thing for new people to the tribes world to learn is usign the jat pack.... adds a 3rd dimension to the game. The jetpack is your life in the game as is knowing how to ski well. Id say if you really are a fast learner you could learn the basics in about 2 hrs.... everything bayond that is polishing the shills. I really need to re-polish the skills some more, been about 6 months since I've played competatively. But let me say this, the first match you play is unreal, no other game even comes close to the intensity.

The learning curve is somewhat steep because:
- lots of weapons, packs, turrets, vehicles, large maps, etc. to learn.
- the gameplay is VERY 3-dimensional as opposed to the other games you mentioned. Especially the offensive gameplay while in light armor, where you will need to learn to jump jet and "ski" properly in order to keep moving fast and avoid getting killed too often. ;)
- the game is (more or less) online only, very fast moving, hectic, and action-packed, and so not too kind to the n00bs. Expect to be confused and get beaten pretty badly at first. It's worth it though once you get the hang of it.
- your TFC experience would come in handy because Tribes has similar forced teamplay characteristics.

Did they really fix the game? :Q
I must have dedicated like 3 years of my life to Tribes, first to T1 (best game ever!) and then T2. But I quit playing like a year ago (and my old clan broke up :( ) because T2 was just too buggy and too many people quit playing it. Sad too, because I bought T2 the very first day it came out for $50 bucks... and because I loved the game so much.
I'm gonna re-install it tonight, get the patches, and check it out. Ah the memories of mid-air to mid-air disking... :D
Hopefully it rocks once more! :)

edit: it's a little known fact that T1 invented the WASD key config. T2 went further with the default ESDF config, but I refused to ever use that. You can play with the arrow keys (I knew people who did) but it makes using all the other complex key binds a bit more challenging.

The game definately rocks. Very 3-d intensive and a steep learning curve. Heck, i've been playing for over a year and I still haven't figured EVERYTHING out. I haven't master use of the command console.

BTW, arod, any particular Ladder system you suggest joining. I see a few different ones but not sure which is most popular. I've never really used the ladder system so you're guidance would be appreciated. ;)

Update, we have a webpage that we can use and possibly a server, but it's not dedicated. Again, if anyone has the resources to offer to run a dedicated server, that'd be great.

Any ideas for a Tribe name? I'd like something sinister like Deus Ex (if it weren't already the name of a game) or maybe something in Latin? Hahaha, I dunno. Ideas?

I already run a few game servers and do not have room for another I am afraid :(

-(GB)- Resurection and -(GB)- Al's Place are the 2 T2 servers. We can play there whenever we want, but they actually "belong" to my tribe, the Ghostbears.

Website: Do we really need one? We'll have our own team message board. I think Sierra killed the chat page though.

I'd really like to have voice-comm. I think Teamspeak is preferred over the built-in voice-comm. We would need a server for that.

When I was playing the most popular ladder was http://www.teamwarfare.com/. They have some shoutcasters or did when I was playing that would "televise" the game in a way. This was only done on the top10 vs. top 10 games but still was very cool. Placer, as for the name I think we should have anandtech or atot in there somewhere, that way people know who we are.

Well, the website would be a hub for everything we do. Organize practice, update news, announce challenges, memlist, contact, skins, strategy, forums, there's a lot we could use for the webpage. And it's not expensive and not hard to setup, so why not?

I'm downloading the demo right now. I'll give it a shot, and hopefully it'll take over my TFC addiction, since I'd rather play on an official team. :D

What do you guys need for a website? I could host tribes2.pcthike.com, if needed.

A key ingerdient is teamspeak or another one of the chat progs, but teamspeak was the best when I was playing....

I don't have it. Is it worth buying the game? Is there a demo that I can try out before I buy it? If I decide to buy it I'll definetely join the AT Tribe.

There is a demo, and it's $10 for the game (read the whole thread). I just d/l'd the demo (you can get it from downloads.com), to see if I'll actually give it a shot.

I just tried the demo for a bit, but the training mode kept having polygon screwups and stuff - it would be working fine, then all of a sudden it was like my vision was blocked. Hmmm... :p

Yup. I'm getting it, but it seems REALLY difficult to play. I'm debating whether or not I have the patience. :D I've been trying the training missions, and they seem difficult alone.

The bots in the traning mission have uncanny aim. If you can take out a bot you can kill 80% of the players out there. Very few people can get mid air disk shots. (spinfuser, the blue disk thingy)

Yeah, I'm having a harder time remembering all the key bindings. I'm playing ESDF, which isn't as bad as I thought it'd be, but I keep forgetting how to hit switches, or pick up health packs, or use packs, or use health, or...you get the point. :p

Do they have an in-game menu, like CS/TFC?

This is not a game for the weak. It's an intense game, as was said before. My neck gets REALLY sore after playing for about an hour because my whole body tenses while I play this game. It's really satisfying being able to maneuver through the stage and run circles around the other guys. They get pissed off when you keep beating them and they don't think.

Then you get the Shrike (a tie fighter type ship with an open cockpit) and you follow them on the ground and smack into them....all you hear is a scream and a message that says "So and so has died from impact, you have kill so and so 87 times"

It's schweet and if you have the patients to learn the game, it's wroth it overall. I look at it as training for when T3 comes out.

*Edit: As far as an in game menu goes, there's the ESC button which gives a few options, but i'm not sure what you're talking about.

Any recommended sites for learning techniques, etc? I hate being the complete n00b in an online game, pissing everyone off because I suck so much.

Either that, or are there any servers you guys play on where I could learn from y'all? I know you won't get pissed at me, will you? :)

I generally play on "|FE| Proving Grounds"...it's usually pretty quiet there unless it's just after a practice. But if you just learn the different maps there, eventually someone will pop in. Usually a |FE| member and they're all pretty cool. Go with smaller populated servers. They should be a little more leanient. And worse comes to worse, go to the Help Chat channel and scream for help. They'll help to school you. ;)

grr... WTF did they do to the game? While always a little buggy, I could always play it just fine. But now, with this "re-release" patch, I can't play it at all. Map load times are almost forever (almost 5 minutes!), and then in game it's like a slideshow with the hdd's constantly thrashing and the game freezing at every thrash. <rant>Damnit, I loved T1 and T2 ruined the Tribes community, I swear... :| </rant>
Alright, anyone know what might be the problem? I'd love to play.

Yeah, I just did a complete clean install of the game (the game had not been previously installed since my last re-format 6 months ago) and updated to the latest patch immediately (some 90MBs).
Defragged this morning, just ran adaware, spybot, and did a virus check, all clean. Not sure what's wrong. Oddly enough, I found a post on the planettribes.com forums with someone with a very similar system to mine having the same problem. Link
Downright unplayable. I set texture compression to "fastest" and switched sound down to 2d and low quality, but no good. :(

edit: never mind, I appear to have found the problem. Link Even though I'm using Win2k (and not XP), this appears to be the issue. Another link
Hopefully, this will fix it. Gonna try now and will post later if it worked.

edit2: it worked, problem solved. :)
Heads up to anyone with a Highpoint RAID controller, follow the instructions in the first link above.
