T1 was the reason I got into computers and has to be my all time favorite game. I remember running it on a cely 400 w/ 64mb of ram. When they were going to release T2 (which I pre-ordered) I put together a complete new system just so I would be able to play it. IMHO it was a total let down. But on the bright side it really got me hooked on upgrading my machine and eventually modding. I guess good things do come in all shapes and sizes. Somehow or another I wound up with two copies of T2 and two cd keys?? I may have to re-install it just to let Evadman kick my arse.
 
I played the first one a lot and also upgraded for the second one. Maybe it's just me but I liked T2!

 
Don't forget to try out Shifter Mod

It add's hercs (mechs) to tribes 2 and a lot of other vehicles. Here's a movie preview:

The Intel 82855 (centrino) laptop chipset supports the game pretty well at 1024 x 768.

Also if you get unhandled exceptions, try filtering the server list populated only.

I agree couldn't stand tribes2. T1's gotta be one of my all time favorite games. Man i haven't played it in so long it brings back alot of memorys. Hiding turrets,the servers with outlandish auto fire rocked. What the heck was that disk launcher called again? Might have to dig in my boxes and reinstall.

Spinfusor AKA Disc of Death. Ahhh, great game. I think I'm gonna reinstall Tribes 1 tonight and play for a few hours. Such fun. 😀

Not very well. I ran a GeForce2 MX 32mb and it was pretty clunky. My Ti4200 will max it out though, so it's somewhere in the middle. Sorry, don't have the ATI equivalents... Cause I don't like em. 🙂

I've been playing Tribes since 98... started on a 300MHz PII, 64MB of 66MHz Ram, and a 4MB AGP nVidia card. Couldn't run the game in OpenGL (was built for 3Dfx Voodoo cards, glide is best for the game but came to support OpenGL very well), so I had to settle with software mode and horrid FPS.

Trick is, is that the faster your CPU the faster the game runs in software mode. I remember playing on my friend's 450Mhz P3 and it seemed like it was running 5x faster than my P2 300MHz. Depending upon your CPU speed you should be able to easily run T1.

T2, definately not. With large outdoor environments and dozens of players jetting all over the place, T2 still remains one of the most hardware taxing games I play. Definately puts UT games in their place, requiring more skill and hardware power 😉 So addictive, and the level of team play and high use of a Z axis due to everyone having energy based rechargable jetpacks, Tribes rocks.

Not to diss UT or its fans too much, Tribes: Vengence is actually being built with some Unreal technology incoroporated into the engine. That fact plus the first two games being rereleased for free...well let's hope that brings a lot of fresh meat for us verteran Tribers to prey upon 😉
 
Tribes 2 requies better hardware but not the best. If your system can run OpenGL then you should be able to run Tribes 2 but you have to turn down texture settings, etc. It runs comfortably on a Thinkpad A21p P3 700 Laptop I had with that video card. You need broadband to really enjoy multiplayer.

For a top end system, try Far Cry.
