Start with 2x 580, 1080p should easily allow 120fps+ in almost everything that way. IF you truly need more speed, you can always add a third.

Each GTX580 takes one PCI-E slot but needs 2 slots in terms of space. Assuming that you will use an x58 board, or a board that supports TRI SLI, you will be able to use 3 580s no problem.

If you are going to spend $1500.00 plus on video cards an extra $75.00, or so, for a proper mobo shouldn't be an issue.

If you are installing these into an existing system, then you need to give us your current specs.

Nvidia supports 3dTVplay now (many 3dTV's), which works with the TV's native 3d glasses.
This is on top of the older 'way' where you used the glasses from the 3dvision kit with 120mhz pc monitors and select Mitsubishi and some others on a short list of 120mhz televisions.

Well, he is talking about hitting 120 fps, which would not be applicable with any lcd/plasma I know of, which is why I *really* would like to know the model of the tv, in case it is a plasma/lcd I'm not aware of that will take 120hz input.

But I did realise after that he could be trying on a DLP or projector which some do accept 120hz input.

Please OP, just tell us the model, would really like to know!

If it helps I did make note of it.

Kind of. I asked what model he is using, which noone is asking. Wouldn't it be great if someone had found a flatscreen tv that would really accept 120hz?

OP if you don't respond I'll stop derailing the conversation, but I really am just curious - thanks!

I'd go with 3x EVGA 580s. Ideally, 3 of the watercooling ready, single slot versions (I think they are called Hydro Copper FTW IIs).

@ OP:

Please provide specs on your rig. What cpu/how fast is it clocked/what mobo/exact name/brand/model of your 3dtv/computer case exact description and model number/how many case fans, how big are case fans/will you consider water cooling/etc etc etc.

It will make it enormously easier for us to help you with this info.

We need full specs. I'm going to say 3x 580's. Better scaling, and less heat. I am an AMD fan as well, and think dual 6990's could be great. Someone is going to say that the AMD drivers are worse, but a Tom's Hardware comparison showed that it is fairly even, with AMD winning by a very small margin. I hope your using SB, by the way. The 2600k is the only CPU that will not bottleneck those, barring an i7 990X, which to me, is utterly pointless. (Is there a limitation on 3 way SLI with SB mobos?)

don't mention drivers right now, there are a bunch of reviewers out there who are kind of down on nvidia's drivers these days...

so you already have the dual gtx 590's, and you're trying to decide if you'll be better off with 3xgtx 580 instead? If you already have them, and it's a custom built system, then I wouldn't change anything as long as it's working for you. If you're disappointed in your fps, or the system is too loud for you, etc then you might consider a change, but even then don't expect miracles. Also, keep in mind that gtx 590 is brand new, so quad sli is likely to improve much more over time with driver enahancements than tri sli gtx 580. If you had it to do over again then I would have gone with sli gtx 580, however.

Most of the reasons I can think of have been mentioned. I would definitely choose 3x580's if I had the space and airflow.

in that case, I would definitely just get 2 x gtx 580 for starters. then, in the unlikely event that you are dissatisfied with that performance, you can add a 3rd card (and start looking at custom coolers/WC loops or at least headphones to drown out the noise of tri-sli). If you get 3 gtx 580 or 2 gtx 590 cards up front then you'll be very disappointed in the noise.

sure that could work. If you don't mind wondering when your card/rig will explode. Do a google search for "exploding gtx 590". At least 6 different reviewers had their cards blow up during testing. Allegedly the problem has been fixed, but I'd still be extremely cautious about buying one (or 2). Going with 2-3 gtx 580's you don't have that worry, those cards are built like tanks. Water would obviously make the system much quieter.

Just looked at one on newegg. That is a great design for a high end sandwich like that, AMD really should have gotten sapphire/xfx/somebody to bring one out for theirs as well at launch. It's hard to justify $180 over base model msrp on a card, but I think that's what I would buy if I was going 2 x GTX 590.

Nice, I didn't know they existed yet:

Are you sure you want to be paying them to overclock for you? I guess it's prudent, in the case of 590s. Still though, the sandy bridge overclock should be a breeze.
