But yes....linux is capable of running on the PS3. Just has to be modified to do so.

Actually you dont have to modify anything. I have tried out a few distros of linux and they work just fine.

I thought I saw someone release a version of linux specifically for the PS3 recently?

I heard great things about it, but playing a FPS on a console isn't exactly my cup of tea. I have my PC for that. I heard the multiplayer is fun though.

I would compare it more to the Dreamcast. Great machine, good games, still dies.

Thats likely but its also true that you can use regular(old) distros just fine. I think YDL is "official"ly supporting the ps3 with thier distro, but I have also gotten it to work on fedora5 and 6 also. Of course I might be a little off by saying you dont have to modify anything, it is Linux, and you always gotta mess with it anyway. But while I was playing around with linux on my ps3, I just followed directions I found online and I didnt have to mess with anything. In other words, someone else already did all the work.

All that needs to happen now is for a guy or a bunch of guys to take on the task of making packages specifically for linux on ps3 and then linux noobs like me can really benefit without having to figure everything out ourselves(which I cant :().

Oh btw linux detects 2 cores and 6 spes, but only utilised the 2 cores when I played with it.

But it died for completely different reasons. Those being Sony's hype machine, and Sega pissed off a lot of retailers when it released the Saturan.

I'm not sure if it would be smart business policy to talk about when you are going to reduce the cost of your console...

That and Sega was essentially broke after they released the Dreamcast. They barely had any money for advertising after the initial launch. Not getting support from 3rd party publishers like EA killed it as well.

Doesnt matter. Sony is fubared. Its taking a massive losse already per console, while Nintendo is making a profit per unit, and MS is breaking even or making a slight profit per unit.

Expect MS to announce a price cut for the 360 at E3. A $349 Xbox 360 w/HDMI, a $299 Xbox 360 Premium and a $199 Xbox 360 Core would be the death kneel for Sony and the PS3 because they will be stuck at $499/$599 for atleast another year and a half to two years.

MS is a ruthless company. They will go for the jugglar while they have the chance.

Sega's handling of the Saturn is what fvcked them over. It cost them retailers, developers, and a ton of money.

Yeah :( A lot of 3rd party publishers said "We will wait and see before we support it", but the problem was, TOO MANY were waiting, so it had very little 3rd party support, and failed because of it. I wonder what would have happend if EA and a few others threw their support behind the DC right out of the gate. I  my dreamcast

Do you happen to know if any of the distros support WiFi yet? It's not useful for me until I can wirelessly access my main PC from the PS3 to play music and videos.

 I actually mean to say dreamcast. But Wreckem's parallels sound pretty convincing.

I'd much rather just play the files across the network instead of using some 3rd party software. Also, how would I even access it if I don't have WiFi? My PS3 is 100 feet from the router. I'm not running Cat5.

From what I understand, Terrasoft is currently working on a set of beta drivers Sony provided to get the PS3's internal wireless device working.

In the meantime, AFAIK the only way to get wireless access on Linux on the PS3 is through a USB wireless adapter...

Same with milk, cheese, bread, etc. They're all sitting on the shelves too.

I love all of these people who come on the board and say something like this:
I was in <store> yesterday and saw <x> PS3s on the shelves. They've been there for weeks!

How the hell do you know that they're the same ones? Maybe the others sold and they got more in. They do have this thing called a factory which produces more PS3s and things called trucks which drive them from the factory to warehouses and stores. Holy crap!

PS3s aren't selling well in North America and Sony has even acknowledged the fact. How hard is it to understand?

Because sales figures show that.

Oh and sales are so bad in Japan, retailers are cutting the cost on their own taking losses to get rid of them.

Cuz numbers and news reports don't lie? Sony cut forecasts on how many PS3's they wanna sell?

And despite this website being inaccurate number wise you still get the general idea that PS3 isnt selling nearly as well as Wii and X360?

And when I went to Walmart I asked how long they had their 5 PS3's and they said they had sold one all week?

I didn't say anything about them having great sales. Just about how people think they're always seeing the same PS3s on shelves.

PS3 lacks a hardware scaler and most if not all of the current titles are native 720p. 360 has a scaler and can upscale their games to 1080p.......

Have a power outlet close right? Use a powerline product from Linksys or DLink. They work at the physical layer so they are totally plug n' pray.

I used to turn my nose up at them but they sure help when you've got a case like yours. Just don't plug them into a powerbar (I made that mistake... once).
