Saw an ad in a magazine for the Treo600 ($200 A/R) and it looks pretty sweet. My contract is almost up with Verizon and it's time to renew again. Anyone have opinions on the Treo?

Are there any other good phones from Verizon around $200 with a 2-year agreement? I like Verizon and I've been with them for years and don't really have plans on moving.
 
It's got a lot of features I guess, but it's a brick. $200 A/R is a good price though.

I have a Samsung i500 with Sprint that I really like. Looks like the i600 for Verizon is similar, but more expensive than the Treo 600.
 
What about those blackberry's? I want something that can be used easily with email, minimal web surfing, scheduling, etc...
 
I have had the Treo 600 for as long as Verizon has had it (damn their delays)... since August '04 It's a solid phone and at $200, it can't be beat if you're talking smartphones. I got mine for $350. It can be used as a movie (re-encode dvds, then transfer) and mp3 player as well... need a few SD cards and you're set... I love mine... until I can get my hands on a T650 (damn their delays) or whatever's after that.

my boss has that phone and I have to show him how to use it everyday. It's a great phone in terms of a pda+phone combo. Sometimes, the lcd shutting off by itself can get pretty annoying, but that feature is there to save battery life.

i'd much prefer a pocketpc+phone though. I really don't dig the palmOS, but really, that's just personal preference. The palmOS integration on the treo is pretty innovative, espeically when you've used palm actively before (like my boss did). I especially liked using palm's addy book and calling anyone from there. The quality in which u can view pics/movies is blah, but what do you expect from a palm based pda and low resolution screen.

As for functionality, it rules. it looks a bit bulky, but not too bad really. the buttons look and feel cheap however. everything else looks and feels great, except the buttons. The wieght and feel of the phone on your hand feels natural.


Compared to other "smartphones," I'd say the treo is on top just because it is really a pda that happens to have phone functionality.




You're in luck since I actually do know a coworker who has the blackberry phone. It sucks. Don't get it. I hated it. I don't like how it looks, I don't like how it feels. Well, it's not that bad.
The biggest gripe I had about it is that there's always this stupid lag when running the phone. You scroll down the damn address book and it can't keep up w/ your clicks. Overall, the phone is just a bit laggy when you try to run the apps and stuff. and it's not a universal OS like palm.

the blackberry does come w/ a lot of standard stuff the treo can't do (unless you buy or dl or crack or pirate or findcrappyfree software for it. for treo, use snappermail for email, and documentstogo for word/pictures compatibility. goto adobe.com for a pdf viewer for the palmos. it's wierd though, since the pdf has to be converted to some other format that is proprietary to the palmOS, so you can't dl pdf files, but u can upload them via hotsync and view 'em)

If I ever had a choice of phone over the ones you've mentioned, then i'd choose treo.

 
great little device, good integration between palmos and phone functions. web, email, phone, all work seamlessly. if you want a smartphone, it's the one to get. too bad verizon doesn't carry the 650. i had a 600 for about 6 months before i switched to the 650.
 
By pocketpc+phone you mean having them separate or is there a pocketpc+phone combo like the treo? I'd rather have everything into one unit as I don't like keeping a lot of things with me at one time. So for pda style phones, the treo is the best?

Is Verizon good, in terms of online connectivity charges and how much time you get to spend for emails/browsing, etc? I've never had their National Access plan or whatever you need to do this and just don't want to get creamed with the prices. I currently have two phones on a family plan ($80 for my account and $20 for the other - I think 1200 minutes or so).
 
I've been debating getting something that will have emails pushed to the cell phone, a la the Blackberry. Right now, I'm mulling between a Blackberry 7230 (Tmobile), Blackberry 7100t (Tmobile), Blackberry 7100g (with Cingular), or a Treo 650.

I've got a good friend who's addicted to his Blackberry 7230, although he said he's considering going with the 7100 series and the predictive text. Anybody have any experience first hand with it?

With VZW, they have a special code (usually by default it's enabled) EN-MOU that allows you to use your minutes as browsing minutes. So nighttime/weekends is good browsing time. Of course they don't tell you this and discourage you by telling you to sign up for a data plan. For the person using the web for quick reference, it's fine. But if you become a heavy user (browse a ton of minutes even when nighttime), they will eventually approach you about a data plan.

The one thing to look out for on the Treo 600 is you have to remember to disconnect after each session. Otherwise, you will take a nice hit on your minutes for as long as you don't disconnect. There will be a different icon on the top of the screen, not that hard to miss.

So if I stay with my family plan, the Treo would work fine for browsing and email? Would I have to put that code in everytime? Also, does it check your email continuosly or do you have to manually do it?

I don't use it for email (but I agree snappermail is definitely the way to go). As for the code, just call VZW and ask if browsing with your minutes is possible... it only needs to be applied on their side once and you're set.

As for a map program, I'm still looking for one that goes well with it. It would need to be used in conjunction with an SD card of course. Maps are huge.
 
Well, can't you go on the internet to maps.yahoo.com with your pda and get directions that way or doesn't it work that way?

certainly it would. Slow though... I can barely stand the speeds at which I can browse ATOT from bed.

We have 150 or so Blackberries in use now. Only 20 or so are the 7100t with the sure type. I like the Sure type but about 50% of the users hate it. Find one at a store and try it out.
 
I like my Treo 600. I really want the 650, but T-Mobile isn't offering it right now and I am not interested in paying $700 for it.

I prefer Chattermail, as it delivers push email from an Exchange server, so I get email like a Blackberry. Highly recommended.
 
I have the Treo 650, if you talk a lot for work or whatnot the upgrade to the bluetooth on the 650 is worth it. Otherwise $200 for a Treo 600 is a very good deal.

Far as I know the 650 adds a faster processor, higher resolution screen, bluetooth, video caputure, improved camera, longer battery life, newer version of palm os 5, .1oz lighter, and the mp3 player software is included.
Also if you get a 650 new Palmone is giving a free 128mb sd card with it.

Are there a lot of bugs with the Treo? Also, does Verizon carry the 650?
 
I haven't found any bugs with the phone and no, Verizon is late to the game as always. I don't even know if they plan on "testing" the 650 ever. They were about a year behind other carriers with the T600 as it was.

the treo 600 is not buggy. it was like a rock. my new 650 however, is another story.
 
Enh, I wish I could say the 650 is perfect but it's not. For me so far my only problem has been with the bluetooth. I got a Cardo Scala 500 and some wierd things have been happening. On a normal call the headset will usually kick in by the 1st ring. However I've had times when it refuses to kick in and tapping the button on the headset turns it off. Not sure if it's the headset or the phone though.
