Any telcom people here? My friend is trying to get DSL from Speakeasy/Covad, and had been waiting about a month to get his line installed. From what I understand, the telephone company has to come out to your house and do what's called a loop install before they can do the actual DSL install? Well today my friend got an email saying that his order has been canceled because 'trenching' is necessary. The email also said that the phone company could not deliver the loop because there is no line running from the curb cross-connect box(the F2 terminal) to his home's telephone box. To recieve this service he would need to call a contractor to install a dry copper drop between the cross-connect box and his NID. I was wondering if any of you knew how much something like this would cost.

Tell him to rent a trencher or backhoe and dig it himself (after calling your local utility locator/staker). Then call the phone company to come hook it up. Of course you may have a big trench in your lawn for a while...
