is anyone else here sick of "+ Trees" you know they make the trees out of two flat sprites have them intersect each other like a "+". I mean, there's some games that are really beautiful graphically, then you run up to a tree and see that its a fricken + tree. I HATE THEM!

Got a better solution? You can add a few polygons, but it'll still look silly when you run up to it.

PLay tribes 2 and you will know why people still do the intersection graphic. It kills FPS on maps that are heavily wooded

Trees in Operation Flashpoint aren't quite 2 sprites together (the foliage does look like that though). Trees need a lot of polys, if you put that many polys into a game, your box will be pretty slow.

could you imagine if they had tree models where every branch was seperate? There's no way today's hardware would be able to render that at any kind of decent speed.

I'm just saying I hate em. I'm not saying that there's not a technological reason for em, I just hate em. I also hate semi trucks. I understand that they are the vital part of the economy, but I still hate em.

It's called "billboarding". It's just a flat polygon with a tree image mapped to it. As soon as games start really using hardware T&L, you will see them go away.

Trees are hard. Current 3D solutions seem to excel at rendering flat polygons, applying textures to surfaces and other "indoorsy" things. We do need some help outdoors. MS give devs a Tree API in the next DirectX!

Nice looking trees cant be far off. For example look at the Nature Scene in 3dmark2001. Damn nice looking and 30-50 fps. id say in about a year all the hideous lookign trees will be gone.

Look at the Delta Force games. You can do some pretty cool stuff with voxels.

<< Ghost Recon does trees real well. The best I've seen >>

Yeah, they are really nice!

Too bad I can't crank up the detail level so I can play with them that way ;)

instead of trying to make oak, pine, mapel... type of trees ... make palm trees instead... low polygons are needed :)

The worst is when they make a wall on the outside and map a forrest texture to it. That's so horrible. They did it in Sonic Adventure 1 for the DC.

Didn't the trees in Halo look pretty nice? Instead of a + tree, they were were a little more branchy... But this is from what i recall from a video.

Heh, what a coincidence, the latest issue of Game Developer Magazine has a two page article on just this - trees in games.

<< Look at the Delta Force games. You can do some pretty cool stuff with voxels. >>

Oh yeah, I've always loved voxels. The problem is they aren't hardware accellerated, and no company wants to put the money into making cards that do it, since the market really isnt there.

3dfx was actually going to do that.
