Tree planting

Just got a spot tree planting this summer, as soon as I graduate.

So far from people I've talked to, it's either brutal/awful hard work, or brutal/awesome hard work. Anyone here have any experience or advice?

Edit: For a foresting company. Appox. $0.10/tree.

If you are talking about tree planting for the forest service in burned out areas, I've been there done that. It is hard but rewarding. I worked for 8 weeks doing that in northern az, the first 4 weeks we sat around waiting for the weather to get fair enough to plant. then we worked our tails off for 4 weeks and made some decent money.
if you are working for a landscape co. , it may or may not be a decent gig depending on the person you are working for.

I worked landscaping as a teen and planting trees and it's hard work. A wet root ball for even a small 6 foot tree can weigh 100lbs or more. I also dug holes by hand (shovels). Sounds like you may be doing reforesting which is entirely different but it will probably tax your back and knees.

Let me add though that I really enjoyed it overall. Working with plants and dirt and beautifying the landscape is rewarding. Also makes you get in good shape.

I've thought about and researched it extensively, but never went through with it.

You are helping a forest company replant the stuff they cut down so they have more to cut down in the future. You get sent into the middle of the forest with anal supervisors, and you plant a couple hundred little trees a day. I think you have to pay a camp fee, live out of a tent and deal with the scorching summer while being eaten alive by the shit out there (bring a bear horn/mace/12 guage).

Advice that I've read is to buy used equipment, non-rippable pants (army surplus) and sun screen. Oh and chill out when they tell you to replant the 5 patches you just screwed up. Turn over rate is suppose to be high.

Ive planted things...but they werent "trees" technically. And they ended up causing more harm to the environment then good.

lol isn't there a canadian who intends to plant so much weed around the country that the anti drug police basically become jokes?

I'm thinking it takes no more than 20-30 seconds to plant a tree. These are pretty tiny saplings, maybe <20 if you're experienced.

Based on their results from last year, it looks like the top planters were planting between 5000 - 6000 on their best days.

I usually just have my slaves plant them. Occasionally, I'll use the bodies of the dead as fertilizer, but only for the very best trees. My greensman has found that asians are the best fertilizer as they have a lot of fish in their diet, and as we learned from the Indians -- excuse me -- Native Americans, fish are and excellent source of nutrients for plants.

whoa... $500-600/day for no experience, no qualifications is amazing. 6000 a day? Like a tree planted every 6 seconds for 8 hours?

I planted trees for environmental clubs....um...it was quite rewarding. =)

I planted 10 6' blue spruces 2 years ago around my house. It wasn't as quick or easy as I thought it would be, but it was satisfying.
