They make allergy shots for other things like dogs and I think cats. why cant they make it for tree nuts!

it is seriously annoying when i have to ask every time a eat if there are tree nuts and whenever i buy foods (especially deserts) I always have to ask/check ingredients.

is it more complicated than dog/cat allergies? I know the symptoms of an allergic reaction are a lot worse when in contact with tree nuts than with dogs/cats, but cmon. dont you think a lot of people are more at danger with this allergy than other kinds?

It sucks but, just remember your allergy is your responsibility not the restaurants. Call ahead whenever possible.

all I know is that i fall under this

"At least 90 percent of children diagnosed with tree nut allergies will have them for life."

Nut allergies are actually quite common.

I just don't think there is anything they can do. Sure, if the reaction is mild you can just take an antihistamine and deal. But if we're talking epinephrine if exposed, forget about it.

Maybe eventually, but I wouldn't hold your breath. I don't think allergies in general are very well understood. It actually must be quite complicated. What causes one persons immune system to turn into the Terminator while another is fine? Then there are the varying degrees of allergy symptoms. All of this stuff must involve many genes and pathways.

Yeah, I don't think they will cure allergies in my life time at least.

there are studies being done right now on potential immunotherapies for peanuts, at the very least.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03...alth/16peanuts.html?em

I worked in one of the labs contributing to this study. The results should be published in a few years.

All in all, peanut immunotherapy is working. The mechanisms for most tree nut allergies are similar, so other tree nut immunotherapies should presumably work as well.

In the meantime, carry benadryl and an epi-pen with you at all times.

Man, nobody had allergies when I was a kid. What the hell happened?

Is this a result of kids spending all day indoors, washing their hands every 30 minutes, and using hand sanitizer every 15?

that's the leading hypothesis, yeah.

So the hypothesis goes, we're too clean and not being exposed to enough pathogens; parasites, specifically.

Our bodies see the allergens as parasitic (molecularly speaking) and put up an immune defense against them.

because the nuts enjoy their alleged alergies and the attention it garners.

You'd be fucked if you lived here...I have acres and acres of almonds and walnuts within a couple of miles of my house....mile after mile of almonds...

In the late winter (Feb-March) the air is filled with the scent of almond blossoms...but in the fall, it's filled with the dust from almond harvesting.

Within the past year or so coconut has been added to the list of tree nut allergens. That killed me at my last job when I had to rewrite all the ingredient statements for over 200 finished goods.

I used to love eating pecans from around the tree. I think I'd enjoy walnuts, as well.

Do you have raids on these orchards? Would you host a party and at some point someone says, "Lets steal some almonds from Old Man Smith!" and then everyone stumbles with drinks and pillow cases to get as many nuts as they can?

'cause we do that with the apple orchards around here

Nah, I don't steal....anymore.:D

Actually, 20 or so years ago, I worked for one of the local electrical/irrigation utilities and we were always working in/around the orchards. We ate almonds off the tree all the time, PLUS, since most of what we did benefitted the farmer, they'd bring out HUGE boxes of almonds, walnuts, totes of peaches, etc...and told us to help ourselves.

Theft of ag crops over $100 in value is a felony in Kahleeforneeya...when the farmer values his almonds at $5/lb...only 20 lbs becomes a felony...and they weigh them hull and all.

That's the worst advice ever. It's a great way to get yourself killed. Epipens don't stop the reaction, they just delay it. You still need to get to a hospital and get put on some hefty meds to get through it. Been there, done that.

I would hate to be allergic to nuts. They make a great light and healthy snack. (well considering how much I can eat in a sitting, I don't know about the light part)
