Treat myself to quality speakers

I would strongly suggest the thx certified logitech speakers like the z-680 (you might be able to find it for under $200 on ebay somewhere), z-2200, z-2300, and maybe a couple more. the little z-xx00 models use the same satellites as the big momma z-680 so the only difference between them is the number of speakers 5.1 vs 2.1 for example. they have all gotten great reviews and they have to be pretty good if they're thx certified. in order to get the certification they are tested to comply with pretty high standards. George Lucas started the thx thing and you know how meticulous he is.

as for other brands i don't too much. Klipsch and creative both make good speakers, but from what i've read, i'm led to believe logitech makes some the the best speakers on the market. it's what i would buy if i was going to spend money on speakers.

I could be wrong since I have never heard the Swans, BUT from the looks of them, If ACCURATE SOUND when playing music is wanted I would bet they would sound MUCH better for Music Reproduction than anything from Logitech, Klipsch or Creative. I am talking about COMPUTER speakers, Klipsch makes fine home and pro speakers also.

They would be good for movies too again if you want Accurate if not BOOMY sound, but for games I don't know as most Gamers want that Boomy BIG sound that computer speakers give.

Thanks for the Link. I have never seen the Swans and might consider them for my Mac as that is where I do all my Music and Videos. I use an AMD with Logitechs for Gaming and they are great for that but BOOMY and harsh for real music.

Dennis puts on Flamesuit!!! 😀

dont worry about it. flaming is pretty stupid and i'd do it only if someone directly insulted me. i don't know anything about swans. i suggested logitech cus every review ive read was really positive all pro's and only con's were things like plugs and jacks instead of speaker wire. i forgot to mention the z subs supposedly have a lot of power.

Yeah I dunno but after the Z-560s which I didnt really like I've been kind of turned off to Logitech, especially for the crisp clear sound for music that I'm looking for. Maybe something from Altec Lansing? But I really want at max a 2.1 setup because that's all I use and I dont want to clutter my desk anymore than it already is.

A subwoofer is a must have for a decent 2 channel PC sound system...so if your just getting the Swans you will really be missing out on alot of low end information.

Id go with the Klipsch 3 piece over the Swans by themselves.

What about the Altec ATP3 speakers? I've been looking for a new sub $100 2.1 set myself, and I've been learning towards these. Seems like they would not just get the bass, but also be able to handle the highs pretty decently with the small drivers and the 3" downward facing drivers would fill out the midrange well. I also think it is a good sign that these speakers have been on the market for quite some time (I think I first saw them in 2000) and seem to be selling well still. Has anyone here used these that wants to comment on the sound?

EDIT: Nervermind, saw the crappy SNR specs on these. They are probably a bit too low end for the OP's needs, anyway.

Good midrange quality and treble quality are also must haves for a decent 2-channel sound system, BentValve. I personally think he'd be much better off with these Swans than with a Klipsch speaker set that went lower but sounded worse.

That's not to say bass extension isn't a valid issue with these, of course. You're not going to be getting much really low bass without a subwoofer. That said, 62Hz is good enough for music (assuming the bass is clean down to that point, which it should be with these), and you probably won't do better for computer speakers at this price.

And that would be a personal preference. I like the Klipsch speakers we are talking about here , but then again I prefer a more foward sounding speaker. Sure Klipsch makes better sounding speakers and so do many others.

Honestly no PC speakers is really good enough for a seriously good 2 channel sound system or anything under $200 for that matter but thats another topic.

Everything is personal preference, but I do think it should be noted that he's more likely to be satisfied with good-sounding speakers that drop off in the low bass than with muddy speakers that go a little lower than that. A lot more music is going to be between 60Hz and 16KHz than between 60Hz and 30Hz. Naturally, it's best if he tries them out beforehand, but I've noticed that most music listeners prefer good 2.0 speakers to lower-quality 2.1 speakers in the long run.

Depends on your definition of seriously good, but I tend to agree. Still, the closer he can get on his budget, the better.

For under $200, those Swans are probably the only PC speakers I would recommend to anyone. Good choice for your purposes..

try these, they are 5.1 however it uses a side firing rear channel that sits on top of the front speaker. So they can just sit on your desk without rear wires. I own a set and the sound quality is excellent, and the surround is surprisingly good.

If you are looking to spend more; the Cambridge Soundworks MC-300's are truly exceptional to my ears. Worth every penny I paid for them and I did'nt have to buy the subwoofer since my last set was the MegaworksTHX 550's from CS. I replaced the fron two sats with the MC-300's and I have great 2.1 music and 5.1 for games/ DVD's.

If you opt for the Swans you may want to look into a more musical orientated soundcard.

I have the Audiotrak 7.1 Prodigy and it is awsome for music as well as games/DVD's.

Dont have that much information on it, but anything BOSE is amazing for music and movies, i havent played that many pc games.
With BOSE speakers 2 small speakers and a subwoofer simply clean crisp and amazing

without a doubt promedias of any size

i have 5.1 ultras and they own

plus klipsch support is great, they replaced my old 5.1s with ultras for FREE even outside of warranty!

BOSE, if price is no object (whatever BOSE speakers you choose, you are gonna have pwntastic speakers).

For about $100, you can get the Logitech Z-2300 2.1 THX Certified Speakers. They are superior to their Klipsch counterparts because of their reportedly better bass, and the price tag is $107 and some change shipped from Securemart.com.

I've never heard the Swans myself, but they sound like they're what you want (no pun intended 😉).

If you find they're lacking in the bass department, you can always
add a sub. There is another person on the forum with that setup (Taejin, I think) and he raves about it. 🙂
