Treadmill Maintenance? (I think I screwed it up)

Have a Vision Fitness TF20. 375 pound weight limit. Been working fine for ~2 years. Started getting a burning smell when I was running on it. Fine when housemate was on it. (She's 135, I'm 270.)

So I read the manual - it says every six months you should take the lid off, blow out the dust, and lube the belt (the little one that runs the motor/roller combo, not the big conveyor belt). We have cats, so dust is a condiment. I opened it up, blew the cat fur out, and to lube the belt I put some spray lube on a shop towel (penetrating oil - only thing I had that specifically said it was safe for rubber), and held it to the inside of the belt as I spun the motor. Then buttoned it back up.

Now, when I walk on it (even just a snail's pace) I get a "clunk" and the conveyor seems to slip every time I bring a foot down. Forget about running. I checked and all the nuts/bolts are still plenty tight.

Housemate can still use it fine though.

Was the oil a bad decision? Do I need to replace the belt or something now? Will it go back to normal as the oil dries out, or is something ruined?

TIA

I'm not aware of any lube that goes on belt drive system. That was probably a big mistake. Lube if any for a treadmill would be on bearings used to support the deck, or on the underside of the deck. Most belts used on treadmills are self lubricating though so they don't need added lube.

why would you lube the drive belt? I lube my conveyor belt semi-often but I've never heard to lube a drive belt. That sounds counter-intuitive. If it's all lubed up, how can it "grip" anything to drive?

I guess I misunderstood the directions. *shrug*

I'll get in there and clean it out; if that doesn't help, I found replacement belts on ebay for $20.

Live and learn.

sorry, didn't mean that to sound so judgemental. What i really meant was why would the manual want you to lube the belt. If there's a real reason I'd be curious. Accidents happen.

You will need a new belt. There will be no way to get the oil out of that belt.

Thanks for the feedback - ordered new belt after my attempts to clean the old one were fruitless. (I know, I know, but I had to at least try.)

Apparently people who buy Vision Fitness TF20 belts on eBay also frequently buy pole dancing accessories.
