Travelors Cheque Scam

My daughter just received $3,000 in Travelor Cheques delivered by UPS. She called up the fraud division and they said they were fake. How does this scam work? No names were on the cheques.
 
Did the return address look like this:

Mr. John Mugu
419 Scammers Way
Lagos, Nigeria

generally they send you cheques, then ask for a small check back... u deposit fake checks and get screwed over.
guess the scammer got scammed
 
Sounds odd to me. Maybe they are going to call and say they sent cheques to wrong address. Tell her to cash them and keep a small amount for her trouble while sending the rest to them.
