Travelling to the Dark Side, INTEL vs AMD

Today I had a look on www.overclockers.co.uk. to check up on the latest chip prices almost to faint in disbelief. "Why?" you ask, "what could be so distressing about chip prices, theyre always pretty predictable arent they?" Well heres what I found. AMD processors, forever my champion choice of CPU (Ive NEVER bought an Intel) are not only now lagging horifically in the performance stakes compared to Intels new 800Mhz FSB, theyre also lagging in their long-hallowed domain, PRICE!

Barton Intel 800Mhz FSB

2800+ = 191.53 pounds 2.6Ghz = 185.06 pounds
3000+ = 272.60 pounds 2.8Ghz = 232.65 pounds
3200+ = 380.70 pounds 3.0Ghz = 350.15 pounds

To me this herald the dawn of a new era. Where before Rebels held their own at performance for reasonable prices, they are now overshadowed by the evil Empire, who for the paltry sum of 232.65 pounds offer a processor FAR superior at a price/performance ratio than the AMD 3000+, with the prospect of some wicked overclocking! I am the point now (every 2 years or so) where I am going to do a serious upgrade to my computer, and for the first time in my life I am going to "defect" to Intel. All you Flame War affectionados can kiss mine, I am a firm believer in judging a product on its merits and nothing else, and to me it seems Intel is laughing all the way to the bank. AMD? Well... id say its smile is looking rather fixed now, and more than a little bit strained.

For benchmarks and performance reviews I visited www.tomshardware.com where they have a huge roundup of all the latest processors from both AMD and INTEL. The results, to be honest, are quite shocking.

Okay, so Intel has the hand up right now. Nothing new, any of us non-biased people would have seen that for the past 6 months. I am also willing to bet that the first version of the Athlon64 will be a flop and not be anywhere near what the hype is. I mean I could be wrong, and I hope I am wrong, just judging from the way everything is shaping up in the AMD camp, the prospects look grim.

I am also looking foward to Prescott as it seems like the ideal CPU most likely. I certainly hope that the competition between the 64 and Prescott will be fierce which will make better performance with lower prices.

I too am looking to build my 4 year cycle system. I'm currently with amd but intel's 2.4c seems to be the little engine that definetly can. Unfortunately intels 875 is having problems with memory and is making me hesitate drop some cash on a new setup.

That's about right, I'm still running a 440BX board (P3B-F) that I bought 4 years ago, but my new Springdale arrives tomorrow (crosses fingers, I'll be at work when it comes).

AMD vs INTEL?? Have we had one of these threads before??

seems that intel may be cheaper for the time being, so go w/ it.

THG is the biggest sellout site on the net...
I turn to Anand for reviews that aren't based on corporate sponsorship.

Edit: I like that...Harm's Tardware

Do people tend to have more problems with amd?

if your not overclocking is intel worth the money?

Let go your anger and hatred, young Jedi.

I'm still uncomfortable with the idea that Intel is the Dark side. We are really a nice group of people. Honestly. You'd meet a bunch of Intel engineers and you'd probably think we are pretty nice, normal people. :)
