Traveling with a suit

Title says it all...how do you travel (airline flight) with a nice expensive suit? Obviously I dont want to put it in the suitcase and check it at the airport. I'm sure someone has done this and I'll feel dumb for asking but I've never had to travel with a suit before. umm...suggestions?

you can of course take it on in a carry on bag (garment bag), or at least you could have in the old days before the luggage size nazis took over the airlines

There has to be a better way. I'm going on a 20 hour flight. The suit will look like absolute crap after. Not too mention how uncomfortable it will be wearing a jacket in an airplane. lol anybody else?

Only answer I know is the luggage specifically made to hold a suit or wear it.

you can take off the jacket , even if you are not in first class/business class, they should hang up a nice jacket in the little closet for you


just carry it on, even if you don't have a full garment bag, you can carry it on a good hanger with a dry cleaners bag on it. or they make light weight bags, like this one

You get a suit bag. You steam it in your room when you arrive or you make the hotel prepare/steam it for you.

If you're flying 20 hours then you make the hotel prepare your suit, they are there for you. I'm serious.

All you have to do when checking in is say "I need this suit ready in 60 minutes" and you'll have it.

Carry it in a garment bag, but expect some wrinkles and creases. You'll have to get it steamed.

Get a suit bag. If you're flying business/first class you can have them hang it in the closet. A few times I managed to get them to do it for my bag even though iwas flying economy.

There's a way to fold a suit so you can put it in a bag and it will not wrinkle. Google it. It has to do with turning one shoulder insideout.

fold the shirt and slacks according to the creases. As for the jacket, unbuttoned, do a single verticle fold (closing towards the back) and store it along the length of a roller. I've heard people roll the slacks to avoid horizontal creases... to do that, first have it pressed along the creases like how it is usually hung, and then roll it from the top down.

Put it in a suit bag... it doesn't count as a carry-on. More often than not they can hang it in the front of the plane.

They will do this for economy as well (unless you're flying some whiskey tango fuck airline). Whatever you do, don't wear the suit. It gets bloody uncomfortable.

this is the way. after 20 hours that suit is really going to need some attention, whether its worn or packed in a bag/suitcase/whatever

I have a samsonite folding garment bag.

Mine is a little nicer than the one in the picutres...but it folds the suit in half. If it's a broad fold, it's relatively easy to iron or steam out. I carry a Sunbeam Steam valet in my bag...it's small.

Just make sure you have international adapters if you're travelling abroad.
