Anyone else been recently, I'll be flying in, but am curious about visas. Mailing it in is always such a hassle, but I've been seeing a fair bit about "Visa on Arrival" sites. Can anyone vouche for these?

Unless things have changed since last year you need a visa beforehand that costs around $50-$75. If you go to Cambodia first the consulate there offers the cheapest Vietnamese visa in the world at around $25. This question should be easily answered by Google.

I've been googling all day. There are so many of these Visa on Arrival companies that say for 20 bucks you can fill out the application, then they send you the approval letter and you take it with you can get stamped at the major airports.
I've also been trying to ring the consulate here in Australia, but the number is always busy. I sent them and email, and went to a travel agent, but since I have a US passport people are clueless, I just don't want to have to pay the fee to fedex it to Washington DC.

And yes I know I can apply here, but they don't list prices, and are terribly hard to get a hold of. Oh well I guess will wait for an email response and/or try again on Monday.

Yeah but they said they didn't know, they were a bit clueless about the whole thing.
Everything I know and have read indicates that except for a few exceptions, visa prices for Vietnam are the same across the board. U.S and Australians are not part of these exceptions so you pay the same. Example from wikitravel:

thanks for that. now i just have to wait for monday and pray everything isn't closed for christmas. i still ave a month and half left, but still would like to get it taken care of.
