stay in florence for a couple days. After seeing the major sights. Use it as a base camp to hit up the smaller hill towns /wineries in tuscany.

I just got back from a two month backpaking trip across Europe and I would have to agree with Vaerilis re: Venice. It has it's own uniqueness but honestly, after a day I was ready to leave. I'd say spend most of your time in Florence if you can. Rome is great for all the touristy stuff and sights but I just fell in love with Florence (Firenze to the locals) Great food, great shopping, great people and lot's to do. Nightlife is great as well. if you can, try and hit parts of Tuscany as well (day hikes across the winery's is great) Do NOT get train tickets here. Your best bet is to get them at the train station "FROM AN ACTUAL PERSON AT THE TICKET COUNTER". Trust me. If you must use the Red automated ticket kiosks (if you're traveling within a day or two of getting a ticket). The good thing is the Italia trains are very fast, and clean. The downside is they may actually leave earlier than you expect. I actually missed a train once cause it left 7 minutes early. Also be sure to keep checking what track number they arrive cause they change ALL THE TIME. Ok that's my .$ 02 on Italy. Have a blast.
