Traveling to Canada for Christmas, don't have a passport

PingSpike

Lifer
Is it possible to get one by then? Ugh, I went to get the enhanced driver's license today and found out it takes one to two weeks and from the looks of it there's no way to speed that up. It would have been nice if that information was printed somewhere other than in tiny print on the application at the DMV but bitching about it accomplishes nothing now. It might show up by the 24th but probably not.

I thought passports take like months. Is it possible to get one by then or am I just plain fucked?

SF passport agency can make a passport in a day, if you plead with them, but with Christmas approaching... who knows.

Are you a terrist?

You're probably plain fucked. It's highly doubtful unless, as Paulney says, IF you go into the passport office in person...and IF you have all the right documents, photo, etc., MAYBE.
Of course, lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on their part...

Why would you possibly wait until 4 days before Christmas to try to get your travel documents in place?

Was this a last minute trip, or are you just not good at planning?

You don't need a passport to enter Canuckistan, but you will need one to get back into the US.

The US is one fucking backward country in the world for citizen rights.

This. Best of luck to the OP though... maybe he'll get a Christmas miracle?

You can get a passport same (next?) day at some passport offices. Closet one to me that does that is Chicago. But you have to make an appointment first.

lol, and what else would you suggest? Just because the OP was stupid enough not to have a passport ready for an international trip especially when the huge deal everyone made a year or two ago when the law was implemented isnt the US governments fault. I don't mind having to show my passport when I return, theres usually a quicker line just for that anyway.

Having traveled all over the world, Canada is still the only place I've ever had a problem with immigration. Took me 45 minutes to clear customs because of the interrogation and other BS I had to go through.

It's actually legal to "bribe" them to do yours faster. It's illegal to pay people to do things they wouldn't normally do (ie suck a penis) but it's legal to pay people to speed up things they would normally do (ie your paperwork).

Can't remember the actual name but I think it was something like "expedited service"

Well, that's bad planning.

Assuming that you have a passport that has just expired (and that you were older than 16 years old when you got your last passport), then you should be able to get a same day renewal by booking an appointment for an urgent passport renewal at your nearest passport office.

You turn up with all your required documents, and the passport application fee, and they process the passport, while you wait (takes a few hours).

This only works if you can get an appointment, and they confirm that you are eligible for an expedited passport. If you can't get to the passport office in person, then you can pay a passport expediting company, they will liaise with the passport office and will courier your documents, and then collect your passport directly from the office. (Expect to pay anything up to $200 for the courier fees).

If this is a first passport, or your old passport has been long expired (or you were a child when your current passport was issued), then the application, background checks, ID checks and cross-referencing takes longer, 2-4 weeks for a 'rush' application. Note that a 'rush' application costs an extra $60 + express postage costs.

Spend time to locate a fishing vessel that is able to make a drop and go.

Or a bush pilot; your choice if you want to use a chute.

Next time plan ahead on something that has been in the media for 2+ years

As of ( Monday December 20, 2010 ), we are processing requests for expedited service, that include overnight delivery to and from the Passport Agency, about 2-3 weeks door-to-door*.

also:
If you are Traveling within 14 Days or Need a Foreign Visa within 4 Weeks and:

* Have not yet applied, see Schedule an Appointment to submit your application at a Passport Agency.
* Have already applied, see National Passport Information Center to contact a Customer Service Representative when you are 7 days out from your travel date.

Have your passport or enhanced ID mailed to Canada, and just live there until it arrives.

"Sorry boss, I can't make it in to work today, I'm waiting for my passport to arrive."

You do realize that the vast majority of the border is unguarded, right? If you're willing to drive to a more remote area and walk a few miles (i.e. don't re-enter via car), you'll have no problem getting back into the country.

Won't work, I checked on the enhanced license and it can't be mailed anywhere but my home address. Looks like I'm fucked. Might as well make my peace with it and hopefully I'll get lucky and it'll show up on the 24th.

I've only known about the party a few weeks so its mostly bad planning...although I have a few solid excuses I could throw out there they really wouldn't make any difference to the situation.

Yep, you won't even be let into Canada, unless you have the right papers. They don't want to be stuck with you if you can't get back into the ol' U.S. of A.

Oh, and you do realize that Friday is a federal holiday, since Saturday is Christmas, right? That shortened your already ridiculously short period of time even more. 🙄

lol...the irony is strong with this one...

Moron

noun
1.
a person who is notably stupid or lacking in good judgment.
2.
Psychology. a person of borderline intelligence in a former classification of mental retardation, having an intelligence quotient of 50 to 69.

if you are going to call someone stupid, correct spelling would be helpful.
