So apparently some past decisions are coming back to bite my ex in the ass - she may lose her hospital job as an RN soon. Ain't karma a biatch? But anyway, she says she's signed up for or looking into some kind of "traveling nurse" job.

When she said it yesterday I was thinking of some kind of home healthcare type thing, but a bit of googling shows tons of companies engaged in this business and it looks more to me like long term (13 weeks -> a year or more) assignments to other cities (countries?). What's the deal here? Why does this kind of thing exist vs. regular recruiting, etc.? Anybody have experience/know anybody that does this?

We have 2 young kids who are already spending most of their time with me - it looks like she's ready to walk away from them even more :(

I don't have any specific knowledge, but I do know that a traveling nurse job could range from a 1-2 week stint in another city, or a 6 month - 1 year type of thing in another country. There are a lot of jobs involving home health care, but I don't think those are considered within the "traveling nurse" description most of the time.

What did she do? Also, what the heck is a 'traveling nurse'? I've heard of wandering minstrels, but not traveling nurses.

Apparently some kind of fling with a married doctor - though she claims "nothing happened". She claims that her whole dept. knew about it and forced her out into a night shift in another dept. ... and are still out for blood. Sounds like paranoid delusions to me - she thinks her physician (mine also) was in on it somehow as well. But who knows? I don't care anymore except regarding the impact on the kids.

The fill in at other hospitals as needed...could be a week or two or several months. They make an ASSLOAD of money. We have 2 friends who are looking into it, and they're being told full salary, plus a generous living stipend. Nurses are in short supply in a lot of places.

Ok, WTF??
Just got a call from her saying it was all just a big joke "they" were playing on her. She was nearly in tears last night - doesn't sound like a very funny joke to me. Sounds pretty fvcking unlikely to me actually.

I mean, that's a pretty sick joke right? Convincing somebody that they are about to get fired to the point that they are talking about quitting/looking for a new job? With friends like those....

More likely she's embarrased about what she told me and trying to pass it off some how.

This is a great way to travel around the country and make lots of money. It is a pretty common practice, especially in rural areas.

In a lot of areas nurses are in short supply. So when their nurses go on vacation, or sometimes just as a way to fill in a vacancy until they can find a permanent replacement, they hire a traveling nurse. Often they will try to convince the traveling nurse to stay on full time, but they are rarely willing to pay what the nurse makes as a traveling nurse.

Everywhere I went in Australia there were ads for shorter term contracts for foreign nurses. It is a pretty transferable skill set (unless you're language challenged), and who doesn't like a young sexy nurse with a foreign accent helping them remove a catheter :p

OMG. Where have you people been? A traveling nurse is the same thing as a hooker. Any of you guys married to the traveling nurse and wonder why shes out so much at odd times or for days at length and don't know it? Holy sh*t! I can't believe you don't know. It really is "True Lies" in real life!!
What you guys need to do is immediately confront your wife with this "job" of hers!

My mother works for a large hospital corporation and may do some traveling nurse-work (nursing? nursery?). Anyways, The company has several hospitals in Europe, so she's using it as her excuse to travel around Europe for a year or two while I'm in college. Plus what others have said about the money.

Yep, the kids sure change the whole picture...

Good luck with that.
