Travelers check in - best spinner luggage?

No Lifer
the wife and I need some new luggage and I'm looking to get some spinner luggage. thing is I don't really know jack about luggage quality.

the only thing i've really read so far is that samsonite is a known brand for spinner luggage, however reading reviews over on amazon makes me kind of want to steer clear of that. for the quality it seems a bit overpriced.

i also am not sure whether soft or hard luggage is better. the hard luggage seems to get dented and what not during travel, at least according to the samsonite reviews. again another reason i'm uncertain about the brand.

so those of you who have used quite a bit of luggage, are there any brands you recommend for the spinner type?

When it comes to luggage, you generally get what you pay for. I'm partial to Hartmann. Cheap stuff will just get abused in short order.

Well, although the opinion varies, I wouldnt classify a girl over 95 lbs as a spinner. Thats assuming she's about 5-5'2. Below that would be a nice spinner. In that case, a nice 48" piece would suffice, although you may have to use the expandable zippers to accomodate food and water until you get her home.

From my experience, I tend to just get what's cheap (meaning walmart stuff, not dollar store stuff). The folks that load and unload your luggage will be tossing your suitcases all over the place. You can spend $30 and get a set that lasts you awhile or spend $300 and get a set that lasts you a bit longer. And I have made my $30 set last many trips including 2 to India.

I love my Samsonite bag

do you have the hardcased one or the softcase one?

i am kind of that mindset too. i'm thinking of possibly getting a set for like $150 that comes w/3 bags and just using it for a few years then getting another set down the road when this one goes to shit like our current set.

I have a set of softcase samsonite spinners from 2007. Great luggage and I haven't had any problems.

Meh, I used to travel globally and all over the US and used cheap luggage and never had an issue. I've had some of my luggage for 10+ years and it has seen 4 continents, lots of cities and states, and it still is in OK shape. It kind of shocks me to be honest.

That's what I do and it always seemed to work out OK for me.

Not spinners, but my Travelpro bag has been great. I had a samsonite that didn't take airline abuse too nicely.

The asshats tend to be abusive when your bag approaches 100lbs 🙁 (due to required tools).

I used to ship my tools in their own bag, but I have bad experiences with loss of tools and the entire bag that way.

anyone else?

My wife got me some Samsonite Silhouette 11 Spinners for Christmas last year - these three:

http://www.amazon.com/Samsonite-Lug...r_1_2?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1328072478&sr=1-2
http://www.amazon.com/Samsonite-Sil...IBIK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1328072474&sr=8-4

Been quite pleased with them, a nice step up from the discount store stuff I had been using. Quality is solid, features and pockets are nice without being overwhelming, and they just "feel" nicer than other luggage I've used.

The only complaint I'd have is the 29" is too big for air travel - barely 2/3 full was already way over the 50 lb. bag limit.

I have this set: Samsonite® Aspire™ GRT Black. I've been pretty pleased with it. They are soft and have gotten a little bent when they've been checked, but that would be expected probably with most any suitcase. The fabric is in great condition though. Whatever you get, you will not regret getting the spinner bags. They are awesome. I loved my carry-on so much that we bought a second one for my husband.

i've had a travelpro carry on that I must have taken on over 100 flights by now and it is still going strong.

and eagle creek for duffel bags, those things are indestructible.
