Being from the south, it's good to see someone post on this forum that their misconceptions were blown away. That is one of the nicer areas of Birmingham, so that might be part of it. The downtown area has some pretty cool areas and seems to be where the younger crowd hangs out.

I stayed in the same area, across the street from the Hilton, hanged out a lot at Hogans, Fox and the Hound, and Black Market.
