I have to go to Birmingham Alabama for two weeks in April for work. Anyone on the board know the area, looking for good food, things to do on my off time? Any Advice would be appreciated.

there used to be a bunch of b-hammers around here. some are still on from time to time.

first thing to do is go west to tuscaloosa and go to dreamland bbq. yeah, there's one in birmingham but it's not the same.

I will be there for two weeks starting tomorrow or so. Let you know if I find anyplace really worth mentioning.

my gf's sister lived there. she said it was one of the most depressing cities there is. Everyone there is nice, though. Southern hospitality to the max.

there's a few decent bars in 5 points, can't remember the names off the top of my head, although the original pancake house is pretty awesome for breakfast.

the actual city isn't great, but it has some nice suburb-like areas. hoover, oak-mtn, vestavia, etc.

If you like seedy dive bars with loud live rock bands, the Nick can't be beat.

If you want to do something outdoorsy, Oak Mtn is nice... It's not Yosemite or anything, but it's nice.

Johnny Ray's BBQ (chocolate pie for dessert is a must)
Surin West down in 5 points for Thai food(used to be there anyway, not sure if its still there)
Milo's for burgers and sweet tea

I have been in Birmingham for a week now and I have to say I am having a really good time. The people are very friendly and courteous. One of the guys at the company I am at has a huge lot of land out by the river, hoping to try my hand at hunting and fishing. I don’t know how the rest of Alabama is and what the weather is normally like but it has blow many misconceptions that I had about the south away, and I live in Southern CA.

Not like your standards were very high to begin with... :sneaky:

Glad you're enjoying it. Just get out before summer, or you'll get swamp ass immediately after going outside. 😀

Come to Tuscaloosa this weekend for Dreamland and pimping on college girls at the bars.

anyone live near fox and the hound, getting hammered its across from my hotel off 280/459 coworkers not flying copilot so solo, anyone in area to hang out

Back home. I have to say it was a great two weeks. I didn’t get to go hunting or anything because coworker got the stomach flue, but it did not stop me from going out and having a good time. If my wife was ever adventurous enough I would consider moving here and would have a job, for what I can afford in Los Angeles I could get a huge place off of a river and not be bothered by anyone which is something I have always wanted. I know I haven’t been to the rest of the state or during the summer but Birmingham seemed to be a nice place, much more than I expected and has changed many of my views of the south and the people that live there.

Places that I went to eat that I haven’t seen in CA. I am sure I’m leaving out a few.
Golden rule, liked
Dreamland, liked
Jim & Nicks, liked
Whistle Stop, sucked
Milo’s burgers, sucked
Heavenly burgers, ok

I've stayed over that way for work too. I had training at the Perimeter Park area near that Hilton and Fox and Hound. Pretty cool bar. I liked that area of Birmingham. It was hilly and lots of places to go to.

Being from the south, it's good to see someone post on this forum that their misconceptions were blown away. That is one of the nicer areas of Birmingham, so that might be part of it. The downtown area has some pretty cool areas and seems to be where the younger crowd hangs out.
