yeah use a solid desktop color like blue, use the magic wand tool (make sure your background is set as "transparent") to remove it and slap the 'closed lid' picture in as the bottom layer.
probably would look better on a pc or without the dock if you did it that way, though.

play with blurring or changing the tone slightly on the screen layer.
it might be just as easy to snap a picture, crop it, put in as desktop and take another picture, though.

im sure ill try it with the laptops at work on monday.

Anyway back to the topic I bet it's like a webcam hooked to a special program that transfers it to the background. One of the pics has a guy holding an iPod behind his monitor.

While that would be cool, that's not what they did. They simply took a digital picture of the background, and edited it on the laptop to match the contrast and color of the real-life setting. When they took a photo of the setup, they positioned the camera to line the two up.

Actually, I think that some of them were probably done like this: Have a digital camera on a tripod, and take a picture of the empty desk. Then setup up the laptop or computer, and then take another picture. Then, take the portion of the background for the computer screen from pic #1, and transparent blend and alpha blend it with the screen photo #2. This should make for a damn near perfect version with little editing.

There's a clue that they did just this in one of the photos (titled BreizStone). Look at where he has the arrow Post-It notes. It's almost as if somebody's trying to mark where the monitor was supposed to go....

That seems very likely as well. Didn't think about it that way.
