Transmission flush

Hey guys,

My car shifts really hard in the morning when i put in R, then D. After the car warms up, it doesnt do it anymore, and its all good.

I called Aamco, and they said they can do a flush, but it might solve one problem, but another one might arise. He said the deposits might be keeping stuff in tact.

anyone ever have their transmission flushed? like with the machine?

Talk to Roger...

I think if the trans fluid is old it might be worth getting rid of it and replacing it - I believe that it's 30,000 miles for an automatic, isn't it?

Right, when you blast high pressure fluid inside a transmission, you disrupt all the little parts inside. And since they work via black magic, it can seriously screw things up. As long as you follow the manufacturers service schedule, your transmission will be fine until it needs to be replaced.

My parents just got another car, and theyre worried that it might be some transmission problems.

One mechanci told us it could be the filter. since its a acura integra with no pan, they have to remove the whole thing, dismantle it and get to the middle wear the filter is.

I just changed the fluids....and still have the problems...its just early in the morning, but i want to know is in the long run, would it be bad...i mean the car does have 160K on it, and I do need it for at least another 50k or two years before i can buy another one. heeh--thats my parents idea...all the help is appreciated...thanks for all the comments so far

Its actually a bad idea to get high mileage transmissions flushed.

The fluid contains particulate--wear from the clutch discs. Sometimes when you flush high mileage transmissions, this clears out all the clutch material plus the buildup that the transmisison needed to operate. The "clean" clutch discs now slip and your transmission overheats and boom, new tranny time.

When you flush it, you have a chance of pushing gunk into the valve body, therby causing all kinds of problems. This is what I have soaked up from talking to people.

Agreed.

Transmission fluid works like any other lubricant by providing a thin film between parts which are prone to friction.
Due to (a) time, (b) temparature, and (c) constantly moving parts (all gears in transmission), transmission fluid looses its viscocity and is prone to failure. This failure comes when fluid is no longer able to create flim between moving parts. That is when you experience hardness in changing gears, excessive noise from transmission box etc.
As you must be knowing, you can do a preliminary check by checking the color of fluid, but it is recommended that you change (drain) the fluid completely after certain number of miles *depending on your car model and type of driving (city/highway).

well i just flushed mine this weekend for my 96 maxima. what i did was disconnect the cooler return line from the radiator and point that in a jug. start engine and wait till 2 quarts spew out in about 10-15 seconds. then refill and continue the process until it comes out clear. took about 12 quarts for me. i did that after dropping my pan and cleaned the magnets.

You're lucky I noticed that ^ or you would have gotten the unholy typing fury I reserve for lying & cheating dealers. 😉

a trans flush is also a bad idea if you're leaking. That old fluid has junk floating around in it, and sometimes, that junk is enough to block the holes if you have a leak. When you put new fluid in and do a flush, you may quickly discover some leaks (at least that's what happened on my jag)

Roger told me why he left and I don't have his permission to share that information publicly yet. I hope to talk with him by this weekend and ask him if it's ok to post then.

Thanks for you patience,

If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably this thread.
