This is so cool that I'm getting my first job with a Chinese immigrant home (Chinese immigrant tend to contract the work to Chinese people that they know?this is a great opportunity to have that bit of the pie, and I?m not Chinese). And, the pay is 4X the pay that I get working in IT.

I got the work, because the Chinese lady saw my home reno, and landscaping project. And, too bad that the work is only for a week.

<--- so happy doing physical work :)

I would rather do physical work on my own time, and post here at work.

I recently took a break from data security and spent a year installing fireplace surrounds (mantles, hearths, etc.), mostly in new houses but with some remodels, too. The pay was actually a little better, and I was pretty much my own boss. I was much more satisfied with the work, too, because I could walk in a house with just a fireplace in a blank wall, and walk out 1.5 hours later with a great looking surround up.

I wish you the best of luck with your transition and hope it is as satisfying for you as mine was for me.

So you quit your IT job to get a physical job for a week?

Why'd you go back to IT (seems you did)?

That what I though I wanted when I were young, however I found out that 7 years of university & a large sum of my own money to make my parents happy didn?t make me happy. During high school I got a job as a landscaper heavy equipment operator and got pay 3X the minimum wage (were promised $2 raise per year for first 2 years and $1 per year after that, and they also guaranteed training & tuition for all heavy machines), but had to quit to go to school because of my parents pressure.

Yup! Will be working as an electrician apprentice at the beginning of next month. And, I will be looking to get a plumbing/gas ticket too so I can start my own general contracting company. (I know quite a bit about plumbing, landscaping, concrete/forming, and construction).
Man your pay must have sucked BALLS to get paid 4X more doing manual labour.
My IT pay wasn't the greatest, however it is inline with government pay for IT. And, you will be surprise how quick I can move when working on my own things. I use to lay sod at about 2.5X the speed of the average sod layer, and operate backhoe/bobcat at about 1.5X the average operator, therefore it is great to get pay for the work instead of hourly wages.
I wish you the best of luck with your transition and hope it is as satisfying for you as mine was for me.
Thanks

Yup!

good luck with your apprenticeship...it seems like it is going to last forever, but it goes by pretty fast.
Thanks, I'm sure that it will go by fast because I enjoy the work. The only draw back is that the starting wage is less than 1/2 of what I'm accustom to, however I hope that situation will change once I have my own general contracting company in 6-7 years from now.

Was taking a break from it while finishing my IT degree. Would rather work smarter than harder, especially since I have a piece of paper that *should* help me make more than before. I can't stay away from IT forever, but it's nice to take a break now and then.
