From what I've seen in reviews, the story is much closer to actual transformers, while the look is a middle ground between the two.

I was thinking of getting it at amazon, but it's back up to $60... so I'll be skipping it

It's not even a middle ground. There is no comparison to the Bayformers. They look closer to the G1 and comic book variations and the story is closer to some of the latest comics as well.

yeah. sucks they are not in the game. Odd they have trypticon. from wikipedia they have other who didn't even exist on cybertron. Swoop, Cyclonus, Air Raid.

Air Raid is in it but Swoop and Cyclonus are only in the DS version. Not the PC, PS3 or Xbox 360 version. Air Raid was included along with Silverbolt and Jetfire for one mission since they are some of the few Autobot flyers.

No, the story is not canonical but there hasn't been a canonical Transformers cartoon or comic in a long time.

Yep. It may actually be better because you won't be obsessing over "OMG! That's now the way they said it happened in Season 1 Episode 3 or in the issue #9 of the original comic!"

The reviews of this game and the Toy Story 3 game are blowing my mind.

Toy Story was fun, better then I thought it would be. It had screen tearing problems though.
