I was planning on transferring web hosts this weekend, and I have a few questions. The host I am on now has a few email accounts on it. When I move to the new host I want to host the email with Google. Will I have to end the email account on the old host, and when the I transfer the domain go and create that account on googles end. I really want to minimize downtime on the end of the user. I really don't care about downtime on the website because I'm in the middle of designing a new one and will just use copy the old site to the new host. The host I'm on right now is ixwebhosting ( wasn't my decision ) and I am moving it to Dreamhost. Any help would be greatly appreciated !!

My advice would be to create the Google account NOW, and then when you change the DNS information to reflect what Google needs you to put in there.

I guess the answer to your question is that email addresses are a function of the mail server, and are not in any way related to your domain name or the transfer of said domain name. They will need to be recreated. You'll want to make sure that Dreamhost will allow custom DNS records, or you won't be able to use Google in lieu of Dreamhost's mail servers.

Thanks for the help guys, its greatly appreciated. So I could technically transfer the domain name and while that propagates around the net, I could just end the account on the original server and go create an account on Google's end. When I create the account on Google's end, I could immediately just point Outlook to the new server?
