Ends up being about 2/3 of the original price. Sometimes companies think that they can cut their costs by more than that, and that's when problems start happening.

The correct quote: "Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes barreling down the highway."

T1 speeds wouldn't cut it if you are talking GB's and GB's of data quickly.

But 45 Mbs, 155 Mbs, 10, 100, 40, 1000...they would all be appropriate. Or MLPPP bundle of 4 T1s if he's in a remote area.

Dude doesn't want to pay FedEx to ship it to India, and you think he's going to pay for 4 T1s?

Well there are special network services specifically for moving video/pre-press stuff around that aren't Big I internet. This kind of thing is just the cost of doing business, just like shipping is.
The "cost of doing business" is what the OP is trying to avoid in order to deliver a cheap price. It might work a few times, but that's not going to last him long and he'll learn this for himself.

If your friend had physical access to the machine hosting the FTP sessions, he could eliminate (his) upload time.

You have a good point and your idea would eliminate him being the bottleneck, but the download speed for the user in India might not be much better than his own upload rate and so even if he put them on an FTP server with a fast upstream, it doesn't mean it'll happen much faster.

I would venture to guess that a local freelance person or college student could match the cost or come very close.
