A co-worker of mine is starting up a wedding video business. He asked me if there was any way he could send his raw video to another friend to edit via the internet (large files like 4-5GB or so) and back again.

I told him maybe he could zip/rar it and send it in pieces via email but then there are limits set on email. What about rar-ing it and then use a ftp client?

Any other thoughts that I can pass along would be appreciated.

Have him send the tapes over night. There is going to be nothing that is as fast as sending the tapes.

And why 40GB back again?

After editing and processing, if your video that you're going to give to the client is 40GB, you should rethink things as that's one freaking long video, not to mention having it on like 9 DVD's.

The finished product should fit on a single DVD.

Put it on removable media.

FedEx it overnight.

He said the people that are editing the videos are in India......

Last I checked, FedEx ships to India.

The whole point of him having the Indians do the editing was that it was cheaper then doing it here in the US. By having to ship it FedEx that would negate his savings...as was explained to me

4GB is going to be one hell of an upload, and videos dont compress well.

I think he should learn to do the editing himself, and create more profits for himself.

That's his options:

1. Ship to India.
2. Have someone locally do it.
3. Do it yourself.

Sure you can send it over the net, but on what kind of connection? 4-5GB is going to take a couple days to transfer, especially to some place in India.

Look pal....I just came here and asked a question for him. I'm sure if he could do it himself he would. He was just looking for a cheap alternative to doing the editing locally.

I already explained to him that it probably wasnt going to be possible but wanted to see what the scholors of ATOT had to say. Thanks!

You want to transfer files; I recommend File Transfer Protocol - FTP.

As an editor, I just take offense to it. Plus editing wedding videos is not that easy of a job., quality is better than quantity.

Yep, I told him he could do that....but does it have to be a single 4-5GB file or can it be compressed? I'm guessing it can be either but the compression will kill the quality of the video.

If he does do a FTP how long will a 4-5GB file take to upload/download on a standard cable connection?

Calling someone a cheap asshole and then telling me to kick them in the nuts isnt exactly the nicest things to tell/do to someone that is asking for help.

Just because you are offended and dont agree with his business ideas?? Thousands of companies in the US outsource for services....get used to it.

You don't want to use video compression (i.e. divx or what have you), you want to use file compression (zip/rar). That will also allow you to break it up into smaller chunks.

Edit:
With 1 megabit upload it'd take about 9 hours to transfer the file I think... (4000 * 8) / 3600.

It would be faster for him to give the people who will edit the video remote access to his computer. Transferring the files on a slow connection, then editing, and then transferring back is going to turn into a very slow and tedious process.

you wont gain much by compressing the video

if he is on a connection with a fast upload, set up a basic FTP server and have them connect. otherwise... get a host and upload them there and let them dl quickly from that site. i would rule out email, as well as any method that requires a non-interrupted connection.

really, the best idea is to burn to a dvd, and ship over there. my guess would be 10-20 round trip costs

QFT. Any kind of media, even a USB HD would be a better solution.
