Transfering title of ownership?

But I want to transfer the title of my car to my dad instead so I can get cheaper insurance (read - instead of $1600 for 6 months ), but the title paper hasn't been sent to me yet. I got the paper stuff filled out last week and I don't think I'll be receiving it for another week or two since they're pretty slow. The question I have is whether I can transfer the title of my car to my dad without the paper? Or if there is a way to do this because I desperately need an insured car to work and such. >>

I don't think you can. You actually have to "sign" the title into your dad's name.

I don't think you can but you can try go to DMV to add your father's name onto the title of the ownership. Remember to bring all your supported documentation with you when you go there.

I think you still have to have the original title to do that.

You can transfer title, but what you are talking about is illegal, its insurance fraud. <--not an agent

In order to get the car insured under you father's name so that you can get a cheaper quote, his name must be on the title of the ownership, and yes, you can be the co-owner of the vehicle.


Edit: Make sure to ask the insurance company to put your name under your father's policy.

It's not owner, it primary-operator. You can be the primary-operator without being the owner.

Just to clear things up a little bit:

Well, I live in CA and I bought a car last October. I went to DMV to register the car in my own name. Next, I called up AAA to ask if they can add the car in my dad's insurance policy. They asked me if the car is registered in his name and I said no. They told me in order to have the car insured in his name, his name must be on the title of ownership.
