Is it possible to pul a socket 478 p4 from my old motherboard and just plop it in my new one without having to seperate the heatsink, fan and cpu? Reason im asking is because i forgot to order some damn thermal gel, and i've not done much work with my pc's besides adding a few cd-rom drives, hard drives, video cards, ram and other such things. Only thing i havent really done is change my motherboard out and put in a processor..

You have to unseat the HSF from the CPU to lift the lever to pull out the CPU sorry.

Looked at the intel site and i guess most socket 478 processors come with a thermal pad on the bottom of the heatsink, meaning that in MOST cases, thermal gel isnt needed? also, just read that the thermal interface material should be replaced everytime the cpu is seperated from the heatsink, where can i get this?

you have to clean the bottom of the heatsink first with rubbing alcohol, when you have removed the Heatsink, then reapply some thermal paste

What if it has the "thermal interface material" on it, should i just rip it off and go with some thermal paste/gel?

sorry i miss read, and thought that you had already installed the heatsink, if you have not installed the heatsink before, then check the bottom and make sure there is a thermal pad otherwise you will run into problems, and then just seat it on top and clip down.

If in the future you do remove the heatsink, then yes you will need to reapply the thermal paste.

I don't mean to be annoying, but what i'm doing is taking my old processor and putting it into my new motherboard, intel recommends a replacement of the thermal interface material (pad i guess)... so when transfering this, i should just apply some thermal paste to the pad?

haha .. ok .. just get some cleaning alcohol 70% neat alcohol content and above, and then clean off the old thermal pad, with a bit of card or what ever aswell (just make sure you totally remove the thermal pad from the heatsink, then just purchase some thermal grease and apply to the clean surface of the heatsink.. and then apply to the CPU .. and your done

EDIT you must make sure that you remove the thermal pad grease from the old installation then reapply with some more, but only to a clean surface and not one that has already got a thermal pad on it.
