Transfering large folder to new computer...

Ok so I have a regular windows folder that has 40 gigabytes worth of information on it.

Is there away I can send it to my new computer without using an external device?

Do you have a network hub or router? Or a Firewire cable? You can connect the two PC's together and just copy/paste the files.

You could put them online, but I don't know any services that would hold 40GB for you. So you would need to do it in chunks and it would be a hassle.

If both PC's are connected to the internet at the same time but not on a hub or router you could use an FTP file transfer.
 
Is there anything less complex and doesn't require additional equipment or money?

Can I just send it over the internet?

I don't mind waiting.

 
May be you should tell us what you have in a way of Internet/Network related hardware and how it it is connected, then more focused help can be provided to you.

Otherwise, collect the information already given to you and make a decision, there is No Magic out there that is hidden from you.
 
If you dont mind waiting I take it that you have broadband (cable/dsl/etc) as if you had dialup it would take a few weeks to transfer that much data. Odds are you recieved a router with your broadband connection. You want to transfer to the new machine which will almost certainly have an onboard network card. Basicly all you have to do is hook up your new pc to the router (if you have one, which is most likely the case) and then share a folder and transfer the files.

 
You can also establish an el cheapo net link with a Cat5 crossover cable.

But the fastest and easiest way is remove the source HDD and connected it to the target machine as a slave.

One cable that connects your old PC and the router and another cable to connect your new PC to router.

There is a 99.9% chance all your equipment will be set to DHCP (which most likely means nothing to you) so they will be configured correctly for a network.

The next part is sharing a folder and granting read/write permissions maybe disabling the firewall. Not hard stuff, but something I don't really care to get into too deeply this early in the morning.

Here is a guide.

You can most likely just jump to the last few sections where you are actually are creating the shares.

If this doesnt help just do some google searches. Its truly not that hard and learning it will make you a better person!

If you're too lazy/non technical to open your PC and upgrade parts manually you should probably pay someone to do your data transfer for you. I seem to recall your time was just too valuable when a few folks were trying to help you maximize the value in your recent Dell purchase...

Yes, but you will have make some configuration changes including creation of file shares on your old PC in order to copy over the data.

I suggest you google "networking vista and xp pc's" and start reading.
