Is there a third party software that can easily do this? I am trying to do it through windows xp but I can't figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Set the ip addresses manually for the network cards, perhaps machine 1: ip 192.168.0.1, subnet 255.255.255.0 - machine 2: ip 192.168.0.2, subnet 255.255.255.0 (this configuration you don't need a default gateway or dns servers)

Then from an explorer Window either type in \\{computer name}
or \\{ip address}

and you will see the shared folders on the other machine.

Good job cubby1223.

Alternatively, you can use an inexpensive switch and two standard (non-crossover) cables, connecting each PC to the switch. Then do as cubby1223 says.

Start > Control Panel > Network Settings > Local Area Connection > Properties > TCP/IP > Properties

Then select "Use the following IP address:" and enter the values cubby1223 said.

When you're done, go back there and set it back to automatic or you won't be able to connect to the internet. :)
