Transfering files between two computers

Ok, I have a laptop that doesn't have a CD-ROM drive. I wanted to copy over some files to it, but I'm not sure how. I don't have a home network or anything like that, so that's probably not an option. The laptop does not have ethernet jacks. I've heard the parallel way to do it is with a parallel cable, so how could I do it that way? If so, where can I buy a parallel cable, and will it work with Windows XP Home (my computer) and Windows NT 4.0 (the laptop)? Or do I need to do something different?

You can use a null modem cable (serial cable). Does your desktop have a network port on it? If so, it would be a better idea to get a PCMCIA ethernet card for the laptop and buy a cross-over ethernet cable. The reason I say this is that if you have to transfer a lot of files, or will have to transfer files frequently, then the ethernet solution will work a lot faster. If this a one time deal, then a direct cable connection isn't a bad idea.

firestorm225, If I remember right a direct cable connect using a parallel port is faster than a serial port. The cable is made for direct connect (make sure you ask for a direct connect cable) for only about $15-$20 @ best buy or any computer store.
Then you need to install direct cable connect if not already installed when you installed win98SE then the rest is straight forward.
Good luck!

Yeah, I think I found the right cable to buy, but I don't know if it'll work with Windows NT and Windows XP.

As far as my knowledge goes, all versions of windows do have the direct file transfer for use.

I do know that win98 has it and it would make sense that at least winxp would have it.
