Transfer speed question

bunker

Lifer
I've connected 2 servers with a crossover cable.

I'm transferring 45 GB of data from one to the other

Per my calculations:

45 GB = 46080 MB
46080 MB = 368640 megaBITS

Okay, assuming a perfect 100mbit/sec conditions it should take roughly 62 minutes to transfer that amount of data.

It's already been 45 minutes and the transfer is only about 1/4 of the way done. What could be affecting the transfer speed?

Machine serving the files is in use as a production web/application server (win2k) so I figured the load on that would account for some, but the cpu usage is under 50%. The machine receiving the files is a new win2k3 server doing absolutely nothing right now.

If you use a rough estimate of 10 MegaBYTES of data per second for a 100 base-t connection that give you about 1.25 hours.

check the network utilization with task manager, you should be near 100%.

Also is this a homemade cable or store bought? Many times the cable is at fault for poor performance. You can even get bad "pre-made" ones.

Belkin pre-made cable.

Network utilization is only at 24% on the win2k3 machine. I don't have the monitor installed on the 2k machine so I can't check it, but my assumption is going to be it's that box that's limiting it.

it could really be any number of things. Noise, cable distance, screwy power supply in either server, hard disks, cpu, ram, gravitational pull of the sun. who really knows.

if you ever find the perfect connection and actually get the rated speeds please let me know because i have yet to see it. sounds like it is moving along just fine though

If you goto the properties for your network card usually there are a few performance options. I had a card that showed 25% utilization and then when I switched the drivers to max performance I got about 80%. Of course that is at the cost of cpu utilization.
