Transfer speed issues and error code

OK so I just started noticing this two nights ago and didn't mess with anything prior..

PC 1
OS - Win 8 64bit
Mobo - GIGABYTE GA-M68MT-S2P
Ram - 4GB
Cpu - AMD Phenom II X4 925 Deneb 2.8GHz
SSD - Kingston HyperX 3K 240 GB SATA III

PC 2
OS - Windows 8.1 64bit
Mobo - GA-J1800N-D2H REV1.0 ( CPU/mobo combo)
RAM - 8GB
SSD - Kingston Digital 120GB SSDNow V300

And a Synology NAS DS111

PC 1 to PC 2 SMB transfer I'm getting 9 - 10 MB/s
PC 1 to Synology SMB transfer I'm getting 108 MB/s
PC 2 to Synology SMB transfer I'm getting 53 MB/s

Now up until now I was getting a lot faster from PC 1 to PC 2. I also had PC 2 crash with an error code for DPC_Watchdog_violation when I tried streaming a video file from PC 2 to a XBMC box and moving another file across the network. This error also happens when trying to transfer files from PC 2 to PC 1 while accessing PC 2 network share on PC 1.

So PC 2 is a upgrade from the Synology NAS. I have a shortcut to it saved on PC 2 to access its shared folders. The weird thing is when I push the file from PC 2 to PC 1 it transfers fine at about 80MB/s. If I pull the files from PC 2 network share shortcut on PC 1 I get slow speeds and most of the time PC 2 crashes.

This is all over GB LAN and they are withing 6' of each other. I have tried different CAT 5 cables and switched ports on my Ethernet switch also.


Any idea on where I should start I would appreciate it.

If PC 1 to PC 2 is slow, but PC 2 to PC 1 is fine, then it could be a hard drive issue on PC 2.

FWIW, the issue could be as simple as a bad SATA cable, or it could be a bad SATA port on the motherboard. Either way, that's where I would start.

Well if I transfer the same file on PC 1 between two hard drives I get a solid 80 MB/s and on PC 2 I get 120 MB/s between two hard drives.

I would definitely try to check PC2 for HDD/SSD (SMART), RAM, and OS system files issues.

Is that in both directions (A>B, B>A)?

Once you've completely ruled out the SATA drives, try a Linux Live USB (eg, Linux Mint) and see if the problem persists. If it persists you have a hardware issue, otherwise you have an OS or driver issue.
