Transfer programs and settings

I installed a new hard drive on my web browsing pc and reinstalled OS no probs. Everytime I try to copy or move the settings and program files from the old HD to the new HD it proceeds no probs until very nearly the end it tells me that it cant't complete the transfer because of security issues. Help anyone?

What are you usign to transfer them over? Programs will need to be reinstalled in the new OS, but documents, pictures, etc. should be drag and drop.

Think he's talking about Windows built in "Transfer Files and Settings" tool, which is worthless in my experience.

Your security issues are likely caused by the NTFS security settings on the old hard drive.

Best thing you can do is select EVERYTHING on the old hard drive that you want to copy over, go into properties and then Security, open the permissions box and under advanced check the take ownership and take ownership of all subfolders boxes.

That might not be your problem if you weren't using NTFS, however it'll get you one step closer to completing your task if it is the problem

You're right Bob, I meant documents and setting not program files, I did the drag and drop cause its the easiest but it wont copy or tranfer. Thanks Danny, I'll give it a try right now.

Thanks a lot DannyBoy, got to safe mode and altered the security settings and I was able to copy and move files
