hi,

i have two hard drives right now, a C drive (16GB) where the windows system is installed and a secondary drive, 40GB. I just got a new hard drive (160GB) to replace the 40GB drive. What is the best way to transfer my files from the 40GB one to the 160GB one? I mean, I can burn everything on CD and then load it back to the 160GB but that would be very time-consuming....

thanks for any help offered!!!

You may want to reconsider your setup actually. If that 160GB drive has an 8mb cache, you would notice a nice improvement on speed for your computer.

You can always just hook a drive up as a master or slave and transfer the data over that way.

yeah, i gotta agree with above post....if that C drive is a 16GB drive, then that thing has got to be old and slow, compared to your other drives.

gee, thanks for the suggestion!! :) I guess i just don't know anything about speed etc etc....

actually, this is what i have and what i like to do...i just bought another desktop...the new desktop has a 40GB (A) and i bought a 160GB (B) as the second hard drive....and i am keeping the existing 16GB (C) and 40GB (D) for the old desktop...the new desktop for internet surfing, and storing my media files and the old desktop for schoolwork stuff....

what i like to do is to move the files from the 40GB ("D") on my old desktop to the 160GB ("B") on my new desktop....

per your suggestions, i guess i will hook up the "D" and "B" just for file transfers....so, D should be master and B should be slave? and then, for my old desktop, i will uninstall windows on "C" and reinstall on "D", right?

i do want to improve my pc performance....but i am a bit edgy about changing the setup....is that a good guide out there on how to set it up?

thanks in advance for your help....much appreciated! kl

norton ghost works really well. Put one of the drives on the secondary ide channel and do a local ghost. Depending upon the speed of your computer 1000mb/min transfer rates are nice for those larger drives.

You cannot just connect your (B) and (D) drives together on your new computer. According to your setup, neither has an OS installed.

Depending on how much data you have on your (D) drive, you might want to hook up the (D) drive to the new PC (remove the (B)), then move the files you want over to drive (A). Then have your two systems back to their original config, i.e., (A) with (B), and (C) with (D), and move the files you moved from (D) to (A) to (B).

Now you can do to (C) and (D) however way you want, i.e., Windows on (D). But make sure you set the jumpers correctly on (C) and (D), since now (D) will be the Master and (C) will be the Slave.
