Transfer fee from college to college?

My girlfriend is going to college next year. She wants to go to IU (Bloomington) for music. She missed the deadline to apply for the school of music, so her first year of college will likely be her getting her prerequisites (sp?) out of the way, and then she'll go apply for music for the next year.

I told her that she should go to IUPUI (Indianapolis) for her first year, and then transfer to IU for the rest of college (mainly because it's a lot cheaper and a lot closer to me).

She is opposed to transferring schools because some guy told her that it costs "a lot of money" to transfer colleges.

I have little knowledge on this. Would there really be a transfer fee, and if so, about how much is it?

I'm mostly trying to persuade her to go to IUPUI for her first year, and then transfer. I have given all the information I know.

Never heard of a transfer fee. Though you do have to consider the difference in tuition prices between the institutions and also the application fee ($40-90).

Let her go to IU and develop friendships...she's going to be there for ~4 years, and they'll be really important. Do not try to get her to go to a school because it's closer to you. On topic, I've never heard of a transfer fee.

The only thing trasnfer between Universities, is the $40-60 application fee.

Although by your post, you sound selfish and are only looking out for yourself and not her.

Considering she'd get the same thing if she went to IUPUI and then transferred, I don't see that as selfish. I'm really trying to make sure it would work out just as well. If it wouldn't, I'd rather her go to IU for that year too. Also, I'm not the only one that doesn't want her as far away for that year...she'd rather be closer as well. She's just concerned she won't get as much out of it and it will cost more.

Say she does transfer, she'll still develop friendships like normal. She still has friends in the IUPUI area, and she could just as easily make friends after she transferred.

The only issue is money. Everything else we have talked about and pretty much agree on. We're looking out for both of our interests and are trying to figure out the best situation for ourselves. Please do not leave comments on anything else.

You're in high school (assumably, you say she's going to college next year). You shouldn't be thinking about "ourselves," you should only be thinking about "yourselves." It would make more sense for her to go straight into the college she is intending to graduate from. It gives her more of an opportunity to network, less of a hassle on pulling transcripts (if ever necessary), and, more importantly, the distance would be good for her as this is a point of great development and self realization.

Well honestly, transfering sucks. Being at one school for one or two years, and another for the rest blows. You miss oppurtunities. I'm speaking from experiance as a transfer student.

it doesn't cost money to transfer colleges beyond the obvious application fee, and transcript fee from the old college. we're talking $60 total here. there is no such thing as a transfer fee.

IUPUI and IU are like an hour away which is not that big of difference really.,time wise. I would rather have her goto IU and get to know the place and see how it is like, then make her go somewhere else just so she can be closer and save a little. Freshman year is more then just getting grades.
