Transfer data between desktop and laptop

I'm looking to replace my desktop with a laptop - the only problem is that I have a hard drive full of data that I would need to transfer. Normally I'd just slap the new hard drive into the old desktop and do a quick data transfer.

Is there a way to transfer that data from desktop to laptop? I have a router, but I didn't think that could be used to make a network connection between the two. Any thoughts?

you can always FTP from one to the other but the absolute easiest way to move data from one computer to the other over a network would be to send the files over AIM or some other instant messenger program
 
The easiest way to do this is to buy an adapter to connect the laptop drive to the desktop, map the drive and transfer that way. The adapter will un you shy of $10.

Plug it in, essentially. Windows pretty much does the rest. Just make sure you actually buy a cross over ethernet cable and not a patch cable.
 
Are both your computers connected to the network through the router? If so, then just enable file sharing.

If they aren't, either connect both machines to the router with a patch cable or connect the two of them with a crossover cable.

If you connect them with a crossover cable, you'll have to give both of them static IP addresses. Then you can enable file sharing.

If you have XP, filesharing is done automatically.
 
Yes crossover cable would be the easiest and fastest, by far. The cheapest to if you don't go to some place that will charge you 5 bucks for a cord. Maybe if your nice to a network tech at work he will make you one, takes like 30 seconds.

Another option is just to keep the silly desktop. Turn it into a file sharing computer, that way you can back up your stuff to something else if you lose/get stolen/or damage the laptop. Put it into a corner, keep it off, then turn it on when you need to transfer files. (be sure double check your files to make sure that it's files are completely transfered before shutting it down.)

 
Well... the stuff in my desktop is a bit expensive to keep around just as an occasional file server. Plus, I need the cash to cover the cost of a laptop. The router w/ file sharing seems like the easiest method, since I already have everything I would need.
